I work Big Joes by reeling at medium speed and periodically throwing in a hard crank with a short pause to get the bait to kick sideways. They look great in the water, but thus far, I am 0/12. I've never had a fish on for more than a few seconds.

The bait seems to work a lot like a glider, but it's soft, so the hookup ratio will be even worse. What can I do to actually hook fish with Big Joes? I'm 100% sure that a straight retrieve won't work where I fish.

Sometimes with plastics fish crush hooks into the plastic and you miss them (BullDawgs too) and sometimes deep in the throat.
It helps to set more then once.

Use light wire hooks like a Mustad 3551 for better hook penetration and be sure to sharpen them.

Sharpen hooks and set the hook like a man.
