| I got a new boat last year and the dealer advised that instead of shrink wrapping the first couple of winters, I could use the Lund tarp they put over the boat when they had it at the dealership before selling. They advised I remove the custom travel cover and use the tarp instead.
The price to shrink wrap I was quoted from my local marina was pretty steep. I am a bit nervous about the tarp over the winter. (Its stored at a family members place (outdoors) and I can't really monitor it for excessive snow weight etc).
Does anyone not shrink wrap their boat over the winter and store outdoors? If so, no issues?

Location: Duluth | Im partial to wrap, especially if your shrink wrapper is smart enough to include a door.
Done the tarp thing and its fine, just takes more time amd you get to spend all winter and spring wondering if the tarp is still holding up. |

Location: Hayward, WI | The shipping covers from most boat companies are pretty flat. They do not normally shed snow very well. If the center is high enough that snow would shed then I would think it would work. |

| My neighbor uses the mooring cover for his pontoon which is stored outside. However, he is a retired carpenter and made a wood frame out of 1x material for the lateral pieces and 2x4 verticals. it follows the contours of the mooring cover and has held up well for the last 10 years. Snow will get on it but first day with a little sun, it melts and slides off. I wondered about the snaps the first year but seems to work just fine. |

| For many years I used the custom travel cover for my Lund Pro Guide. On top of that, I put one of those generic covers you get from Fleet Farm, then over that, I put a regular tarp that I use bunjee cords to hold in place. Like North said, it will hold fresh snow until there is a sunny day, and then it slides right off the tarp. A couple years ago, I got one of those garage in a box things from Menard's, and that is a little better, as I can also put stuff like lawn chairs, inside with the boat. |

| If getting your boat wrapped costs as much in your area as it does in mine, buying one of those garage in box kits is probably no more than the cost of 3 years of wraps. I have a 12x20 unit that I store my UTV in year round and it has held up well for 4 years. I suggested it to a neighbor and he felt it was too expensive but given that he pays $200+ every year to have his pontoon wrapped, it would be paid for by now.
I plow with the UTV so it is really nice to have it dry and snow free when I go out to plow. Not real pretty but functional. |
