A ton of great input on my first post about color. Some of the responses bring me to another question.

When you're fishing in areas with a high concentration of certain types of baitfish, do you try to match the bait color that you're using to the baitfish in the area, are do you try to contrast?

So let's say you're fishing shallow where there's lots of perch, but there are also ciscoes in the lake. Do you use a perch colored bait since you're fishing where there's lots of perch? Or do you maybe throw on a ciscoe pattern because of the fact that muskies in this water do feed on ciscoes? The idea here being, throw a ciscoe into a school of perch and it's going to look out of place, easier for the musky to notice and key in on. Maybe this wounded ciscoe in a location that is full of nothing but perch will really get the musky's attention. Would this game plan be more effective than going with a perch colored bait in this situation?

My thinking is that if you throw a perch colored bait into a school of perch, you're going to have to do extra work to get it noticed by a musky. You're going to have to both get its attention and trigger it. But if you throw a color that contrasts this school of bait, the color will stand out and get the musky's attention, then all you have to do is trigger the bite.

What are people's opinions on this one?

I don't like the match the hatch theory. I spend most of my time on a shad based lake that has good water clarity. Our best producing colors are orange tiger and perch patterns, third would be firetiger. I have trolled, casted and otherwise wasted quite a bit of time tossing white and shad pattern lures to no avail.

I have had very little luck with shad colored stuff. Lots of luck with real odd-ball colored stuff, and pretty good luck with perch and bluegill colored stuff. I think color matters a lot, just gotta narrow it down as to when to throw certain colors, and when not to throw them... My only fish last year was on a bait which I lacked confidence in both the color and the type of bait.... Raised a ton of fish on all sorts of colors and types of baits and missed more then I caught(slack in line during hookset, too fast or slow setting hooks..etc..) except on shad colored stuff... never have seen many chasing them and the few that have were not very aggressive...

I'm going with Chad on this one. I've tried the hatch colored baits and they just don't seem to cut it on this lake. If it's not bright, then it's not going to see much time on the end of my leader. It don't seem to matter if it's clear, muddy, cloudy, or sunshine. Maybe our fish just don't know any better, but I think it's easier for them to spot something that stands out against the prey they are used to feeding on. I also think every lake is different and know this doesn't hold true everywhere I fish.

It is absolutley impossible to match the hatch with a lure. Lures don't look, sound, move, or even loosely resemble the real thing, and that is why they work.
