Posts: 620 Location: Seymour, WI | I have an Okuma rod that I cannot get to collapse. I tried heating it up with a hairdryer but that didn't help. Any other ideas to get this rod to collapse?

Posts: 8787 | Hate that. You can try ice. Or do what I did - hold the rod upright about 3 feet off the ground and let it drop on the butt. If that doesn't do it hold the blank just above the joint and bop it on the ground. As you get more and more frustrated you will use more and more force. It goes something like this: *bump* *bump* *bump!* (Hmph.) *BUMP!* *BUMP!!* *WHAM!!* *WHAM!!* (GRRRR!) *WHAMWHAMWHAMWHAMWHAM!!!!!"* If that doesn't work and you get so mad that you break the friggin' thing, think of it this way: It wasn't any good the way it was if it won't fit in your truck or in the rod locker, right? Well, now it fits!

Posts: 983 | a bag of ice always did the trick for me when bumping the butt end on the floor wouldn't work. Let a bag sit over the telescopic portion and sit for a bit. If it doesn't work ice it a little longer

Well, now it fits! Ice on the male portion to shrink it/ keep it cool than gently heat the female part at distance with a lighter or heat gun to expand it. Than do what he said. Also, when you get it freed up, and you go to pull it out next, make sure your perfectly lined up, because you might just end up deciding to leave it extended when/if jams extended again. That's what I did with my Assualt stick. Any length rod fits sticking out your window vertically Ha!

The screws, rivets on a reel seat are not very robust. If someone slams the butt against a hard surface, I could see them shearing.

Location: PA Angler | If shrinking or heating didn’t work which that would be the last thing I do. Take the rod behind your knees and get a good grip where it breaks down. Then just pull with separating your knees.

Posts: 8787 | I almost threw mine out the window going across Hwy 2 somewhere West of Hurley after a couple hours listening to it rattle against the back window of my truck. Lucky my wife has more patience than I do and made me stop and wrap rags around it. I had to pee anyway. Those folks on the bad river reservation don't take kindly to strangers stopping and peeing on the side of their roads in front of their houses though. If 'ya can hold it till you get to Ashland I would. Also not a good idea to say: "What. Ain't 'ya never seen a guy with his ___ in his had before? Don't tell me you never peed on the side of the road!!"

Don't tell me you never peed on the side of the road!!" I've made that drive several times, and it never occurred to me that it was a Reservation.. Going to Green Bay via Hwy 32 and 55, it's clearly evident when you enter the Menominee Reservation. From the wording on the signage along the right of way, I think if I had a flat tire, I'd keep on going to Shawano before stopping to change it.. The same along I-90 in Western NY. A portion of I-90 transverses Indian land, and they make no bones about the billions they're owed, according to billboards at each boundary.. DISCLAIMER: I have no dog in any of these hunts... just sharing observations..
