Hello,

I’m looking at St Croix’s lineup and was curious who has experience with the new Downsizer line, particularly the 7’10 twitchin stick?

One of my favorite rods is the 7’6” MH in the Musky Mojo line, and was curious how this rod compares? I use the MH for jerk baits (I can work up to a 7.5” phantom soft tail no problem) and regular size bull dawgs.

Im quite curious, as well. Before covid cancelled my annual trip, I was looking at finally getting a nice St. Croix rod. Now that I'm finally going back this year, I'm shopping again.

The Downsizer is on my list (l throw mostly 8s, double 8s and 9s), but it's spec'd exactly the same as my Abu Garcia Veritas, which is great for single 8s, but starts to struggle with double 8s. I'd be curious to know exactly what people are throwing with this rod.

I got one.

I bought it at the Musky Show this year and I haven't used it yet though. I've been looking for that type of rod for a long time. I wanted a crossover rod that I could throw larger bass baits or small musky baits. I have a St Croix Premier MHF, but even that is a little big/stiff for some lures like mepps, 5 inch minnow etc.

For me, it's fun to let the rod load up and work for me and get a good feel for both the lure and the fish. I was launching those smaller lures with my bass rod because it was easier and had a better feel. Now I'll use this 7'10'' downsizer for Mepps, Ghosttail 100s, small minnows, 7" suicks, Lil Bastard, spring dawg/micro medusa, small swimbaits/cobra jigs etc.

I'm gonna pair it with a tranx 300, put 50 lb line on it and not horse the fish in as well.
The comment about the double 8's being right at or slightly above the limit for this type of rod seems about right. I'd probably put the double 8's on my Premier MHF.

I paired the St Croix 7'10" twiching stick with a Daiwa Lexa 300HD with 65 lb braid. I absolutely love this set-up. I am fortunate to use this set-uup exclusively with " downsize" approaches. This includes Mepps bucktails, small crankbaits, 6" suicks, creature jigs, etc. I dont think this set-up would be ideal for regular size jerks, double 8's or rubber uless it was the mini size bulldawgs or medussas.

I don’t have that downsizer but I own a 9’ legend elite MH with a 300hd on it and it’s easily the most comfortable rod I’ve ever used. Pretty much exclusively use it to throw cranks 5-7.5”. I have tried it for blades and it was too light for my preference for anything over a mepps giant killer. For even single/double 8’s I’d go with a 9-10ft heavy because it’s not going to load up so much and allow you to power through an 8 better. I’ve held one of those 7’10 downsizer and it feels great in your hand but even for small cranks I prefer at least a 9’. Definitely wouldn’t throw gliders on it, even a 6” phantom feels to be a bit much on my MH. If you want to throw small to mid sized twitch baits though that 9’ mh legend elite is about as good as it gets in my opinion
