Posts: 65 Location: Minnesota | Hello! I just wanted to come on here and ask about your guys' recommendations on primarily a bit more budget friendly muskie rod, but also reels too. I have been trying to get my dad his first setup for Muskie fishing, but he doesn't want to spend as much as I would on a new rod and reel, and frankly, I don't know about too many cheaper alternatives when it comes to rods specifically. I do think the move is to still go with a Tranx 400 if possible because I at least want him to get a dependable reel that'll last a long time. As for rods though, I feel like there has got to be some solid and cheaper alternatives to St. Croix Legends or Thorne Bros customs, ya know? I have heard about the Mojo Muskie rods, but haven't used one, so not sure how great it is. Anyways, thanks for reading if ya did, and thanks for any help at all. -Alex

Posts: 772 | Currently, the most most popular budget friendly reel for muskies has got to be the Piscifun Alijos 300. Used mine last year and it checked off all the boxes what good musky reel requires. It also is available in two different gear ratios to cover all the bases. And, most importantly the reel costs about 100 dollars. Personally, I would make a move quick because with inflation, I don't know how Piscifun could keep the reel at such a great price. For rods, BPS came out with a new Predator line for $99. And the Bulldog Predators are slightly higher. This combo selection would be a good place to start. Kdawg

These are all fine rods, as are others mentioned in other post. also, there is a good deal right now on here in the buy sell page for a TI rod under 100.

Posts: 541 Location: NW WI | Never ran one, never researched the brand, hopefully some folks here can jump in on this. But that "Six Gill" brand that's always advertising its BOGO's everywhere online finally has its "Brute" series in its BOGO sale. CLAIMS 7'9" 8-14oz lure weight swimbait rod for $180. 180÷2= 90. On the short side of course, just throwing it out there.

Posts: 427 | You don't need a fancy set up to get started. I won't comment on reels but as for rods The Bass Pro shops flipping style rods work well and are CHEAP. These rods will handle baits up to a couple ounces casting or trolling. We,ve been using them for years with entry level fishermen with no rods broken while fishing or fighting fish. And if it doesn't work out your out a couple bucks not a couple hundred.

I was just listing different products if that's what you're getting at. My dad would probably prefer to stay at around the $300 mark if possible.

Posts: 163 Location: West Central WI | Consider going to the MN Musky Expo on 4-6 March (https://mnmuskieexpo.com/) for good deals on new equipment. If not, there are several chapters of Muskies, Inc in MN. You can join one of them and find out if any members have good used equipment. If they are like me, they all have a rod or five sitting around that are unused and still good. I sold eight of my commercial rods last year after starting to build my own, three years ago. There are many ways to save money in muskie fishing and also many ways to spend money on premium gear. It all depends on your budget.

Posts: 1476 Location: Brighton CO. | Yes I've shelled some money high quality rods but I also bought a really nice rod from the bargain cave at Cabela's after I used some points off my credit card it cost me 35 bucks. (I think it would have been 60 bucks without the points) Nice all around 8 footer heavy enough to work a Dept Raider thru the weeds along jerkbaits, bucktails, topwater and even small stuff. Forget heavy plastics or double 10's. Light years ahead of the stuff I used in the 1970's. Or even try to get a used rod on this board.
