From the Ifishillinois FB page:

It's Muskie Monday! District Fisheries Biologists Frank Jakubicek and Andy Plauck, along with the Regional Technician, were participating in the Asian Carp SIMs (Seasonal Intensive Monitoring) event in the Chicago Area Waterways (CAWS) on May 20th when they collected (via DC electrofishing) a couple of fish they are very familiar with – MUSKIE! The trio along, with a slew of other IDNR Staff throughout Illinois, manage muskie populations and sample for muskie each year, but catching these in the Calumet River was extra FUN for them!

These fish were a 45.25” female and a 37” male muskie. The fish were likely from the northern waters of Lake Michigan (vacationing from where they’re much more abundant). These fish may be the first muskie collected by Illinois DNR staff in the waters of Lake Michigan. Rumors of muskie in the southern portion of Lake Michigan have been around for a few years and one was caught (and photographed) several years ago near the Planetarium. These fish, for these guys, was quite a treat! Frank says, ”You never know what you’re going to see when sampling for fish. I wouldn’t say there’s a fishable population in the southern basin of Lake Michigan, and I wouldn’t suggest putting much effort into targeting, but these are a great example of the old adage – Fish move, because they can!”

Neat story. There have been some big muskies caught by guys fishing from break walls, etc. in the Milwaukee area while fishing for other species in recent years. WI DNR said basically same thing, they are rare but not unheard of.

It looks like two different strains of fish to me so they may have come from different places. I also have suspicions there could be local plantings.

That's awesome. I wonder if they'll ever get into the Illinois river system. If they live in the Mississippi, and the Wisconsin, why not Illinois?

As an indicator species, Muskies truly have exhibited they can find places with resurected water quality. Would be interesting to find out if these fish could've originated from the Green Bay efforts.

I've also heard they could have come from Michigan as well.

Neither one is too hard to believe. A MI-DNR biologist together with Ontario biologists  in the Lake St. Clair district are doing a muskie-tracking study, and have now documented 2 fish traveling from LSC to Lake Erie and all the way east to Bufallo and back in the space of one year. One fish has now done it twice.

They sometimes get the wanderlust...
