Subject: Fish Fries

With the start of Lent today, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel carried a story about the best fish fries in the Milwaukee area that you can get as carry out. Don't know about other states, but Wisconsin has a long tradition of Friday fish fries. At one time they almost all featured lake perch but with the dwindling supplies, today most are cod or haddock. Some are only during Lent with some churches, American Legion posts serving hundreds of fish fries during Lent. On the other hand, a lot bars and restaurants have them on Friday year round. One place near me had such crowds on Friday, they have fish fry on Thursday night as well (Moondance, Sugar Camp).

Anybody have favorites you care to share? Can't eat pizza all the time. Also wondering if this is primarily a Wisconsin thing.

For the Chicago folks, Troha's on 26th. street in Chicago is legendary. Also, JJ's makes the best deep fried catfish I ever had, make sure to get the hot sauce with it. Kdawg

Fresh fish has ruined me to large fish fries, I'm sure there are good ones out there somewhere.

Don't care much for carryout. At minus temps it's cold by the time you eat it. Reheating doesn't cut it.

Pick up a small toaster oven, it will keep the fish crisp when u re-warm it. Kdawg

I think I ate at a JJ's once. It was good but all the bones are in the catfish chunks.

Had the cod dinner at the fancy restaurant here is sterling. It's the same cod I can buy in the freezer isle at the grocery store.

Todd, if you give JJ'S a try again, order the three or 4 piece catfish FILET dinner,no bones, with the hot sauce. You will probably get heartburn,Lol, but it is worth it, guaranteed! Kdawg

Well, it is hard to beat a panfish fry with fish you just took out of the lake. But, fish fries in WI tend to be fun, social events. Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee for instance is housed in a old brick building, with dining hall seating about 150 people. On Friday night, they have a good selection of seafood, their great beers on tap and at 6:00 PM an old fashioned Polka band. Have been there a couple times. Fish is good, the atmosphere is fantastic. Young and old all together having a good time. Best cheese curds I have ever had, and in WI, that is saying something.

Kwik Trip fish sandwich ain't bad.

Some good ones in the Wausau area:
1) The Loading Zone
2) Palm's Supper Club - Perch is awesome
3) Wiggly Field

Mad Dan's in Twin Lakes, WI used to be our favorite, but haven't been there in years.

Camp Shakey Saloon in Menominee County MI has a pretty good Friday fish fry. Bluegill or walleye. You get a pretty big pile of bluegill if you order that.

Went to Culver's twice this year for Walleye took last week off because of the snow and cold (order thru drive thru and eat in car) Was going tonight called ahead and they are sold out for the year checked Longmont location (out of metro Denver) 21 miles from my home good to go heading there this afternoon nice warm day in the 50's . Used to go to Rocky Flat's Lounge on the west side of town they closed down for a couple of years after a kitchen fire, insurance and coding issues and the old owner getting screwed out of his business the old faithful refuses to step foot in the new place. Now called Rocky Fats Grill. Used to a great place for Friday fish fries and Sunday Green Bay Packer games.

The nicest restaurant in town here serves the same cod you can buy in the frozen food section at the grocery store. I sure do miss the food around the Midwest.

I've never been to London, but it seems like those fish n chips places would almost be worth the trip?

Not really. Growing up in Cedar Rapids, we would occasionally go to a place in town that was fashioned after an English fish and chips place, called Lloyds Fish and Chips. We liked it and thought it was pretty good, but assumed it was pretty ordinary by comparison. Got a place here in St. Paul, called Mac's Fish and Chips, almost identical. Well, there is virtually no difference between them and the three different fish and chips places I went to in England. Fish and chips are fish and chips.

Northwoods brew pub in Osseo, Wi. Some pretty good beer choices to go with the beer battered cod.

IIf you are traveling to Northern Wi on Hwy 51 you have to check out the Hilltop in Stevens Pont. One of the absolute best anywhere.
