Im going from a van to a silverado for towing my boat.
i been looking at toppers and it seems like they would be pretty easy to break into unless if i spent the extra $ for a commercial topper
is there any toppers that are at least somewhat decent to stop theft

No you can get into any of them. If you are concerned about tackle or guns google Decker or Decked it's a drawer system for the bed. Nice thing with those is you lock each drawer and if you have a locking liftgate it's almost impossible to get into those drawers in a short time. Downside is you lose height for hauling stuff.

nothing like seeing an old man with a brand new truck with a POS camper top on it. Don't be that guy.

Locks are for keeping honest people, honest. But an ARE/Century commercial aluminum cap is about as safe as you can get VS cost. You can order exactly what you want, color match painted, with or without side/front/rear windows, side tool boxes, tool box shelves, elevated roof, and you can get rid of the tailgate and use cargo doors. LED lights when doors are open, ignition key codable locks, etc.

TruckVault makes/sells steel box/drawer bed storage that is safer than your vehicle. Not plastic.

I have ARE hard tonneau covers on both of my trucks (one going on 11 years). IMO, the best out there.

I don't use the TruckVault system, but several cronies use it to transport their high dollar tubed shotguns and other gear to clay target shooting events all over the country, with confidence.

I have some cheap alarms that I arm inside my topper windows, at least they'd make some noise. Also, I feel better when things are covered up, and not in plain view. Throw a blanket or piece of cardboard over valuable things, less tempting to break in i'd think. If they can break a topper window, they'd easily break a van or suv window too.

Love my old man topper (that's what I've always called it).

The electrician that wired my house had this in his big diesel pick up, The TruckVault ,and I agree that thing would be harder to break open than a vehicle, including a car trunk. He used it for shotguns and expensive bows for hunting.
But, the reality is that if they have enough time, any system can be breached. Today, with 20V powered grinders, recip saws, they will get in. I have a number of 20V tools and a grinder with a good steel cutting wheel will make short work of a padlock for instance.

If you don’t need all the space of a topper, you might look at Diamondback hard tonneau covers. I’ve always had a fiberglass topper on my trucks but I installed a DB on my Colorado. I now have a new Silverado and ordered another DB for it. Pretty versatile and keeps everything covered. With only a 5’10” bed, I’m not worried about trying to get my rods in there. But all the rest of tackle is out of sight.

Weather tech has a hard tonnue covers. I will be getting one of those. My tonnue cover was cut open last week. 500.00 cover destroyed for a 20 dollar fiskars hatchet, Idots.

On my latest truck instead of getting a topper as in the past I went with a Retrax. It is a metal roll up tonneau cover that is lockable. Several years ago when they were putting a pipeline thru our family farm we noticed most of the pipeliners had these covers. They had tried other tonneau covers but these held up the best and more theft resistant than other covers. The one downside to the Retrax is the aluminum box the cover rolls into takes up some space in the front of the box.
