Musky Hunter Facebook:
We are saddened here at Musky Hunter to announce the passing of longtime Field Editor Tom Gelb on Christmas morning. Tom was surrounded by his loving family. Please keep his wife, Toni, and family in your thoughts and prayers.
A story about Tom's life and his huge influence on the musky fishing world will appear here this week. Much of what we take for granted today was pioneered by Tom Gelb.

A true pioneer and musky fishing legend. If you didn’t learn anything from his contributions, you weren’t paying attention. Rest In Peace Tom!

Very Sad!  Super Guy,  Super Fisherman!

Traded many emails with Tom after he Bought his home In Vilas County, after being part of the Milwaukee Chapter of MI. Rubbed elbows With Tom many times.

Heck, Tom hand picked a dozen vintage depth raiders for me when he was instrumental in the production of the original Depthraider. Still have several unfished baits in remembrance of Tom!

Tom secretly would tell me some of his tricks as unfinished lures traveled down the production line;)

 Condolences to Tom’s Family!

 JD

Howdy,

So sorry to hear that. His book is a must read for everyone. One of the best muskie books I ever read and I don't even troll.

Take care,

Ruddiger

May he Rest in Peace.

I don't know much about the man although I have read the name in the past. Can someone post the name of his book? If anybody has a copy to sell I would be interested.

What year is that trolling motor?

found these low-res pictures of Mr. Gelb in my archives. Clearly a great fisherman who inspired folks from regions all over the U.S. I'm from the mid-Atlantic and he influenced me.

I only know him from his articles and his book which I luckily acquired last year (out of print but Kindle edition available). I learned a ton from his writings. He was certainly a master of the details and obviously a great fisherman. God rest. Too soon gone...

Sad to hear of his passing.

I always hoped to run into him at the ramp as we fished some of the same lakes, but I think I turned into too much of a wimp and didn’t get out on the really crappy days when he was out there pulling oars. He’s one of the reasons I got into row trolling in the first place.

The thing that always stuck with me was when he caught the 51# musky row trolling on the last day of the season, he had been out virtually every day in November and that was his first fish in something like three weeks. He was in his seventies and he was out there in the cold the wind and the waves rowing and never called it quits.

A fellow guide who has also passed on told me that when he met Gelb he was surprised how small a guy he was but said he thought he was tough as shoe leather.

Yes, he was tough as shoe leather, and he paid his dues for his time on the water. What I didn't say about Tom Gelb in the link below was that he suffered terribly from arthritis in his hands and body. That's what I found out while helping him with his boxes of books.

RIP Tom!

FYI, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Outdoors writer, Paul Smith, wrote a story about Tom Gelb for the Sunday Edition of the Sentinel. While still attending Michigan Tech, he spent summers guiding at Manitowish Waters. Tried to link it but was not successful.

ToddM's post reminded me of this old Tom Gelb MF thread, enjoy. Read it all, it gets hilarious. I'm sure Tom got a kick out of it as someone had likely showed it to him. RIP Tom.
