Has this ever happened to you?

It's happened to me once. Night fishing on Tonka about four years ago. Dead calm night, running my MinnKota on constant low while fishing a big sand flat in 6 ft. of water. Suddenly, it felt like I hit a submerged stump. The boat lurched and began to lightly rock as the fish wrestled with the lower unit for a few moments, then the water under the trolling motor detonated and she was gone. After a few minutes of fruitless casting in the area, I pulled the motor up to inspect for teeth marks. The motor was new, and now had teeth marks in the paint, running up and down the unit.

I was stunned at what just happened cause that lower unit is BIG! Seemed like a pretty sizable fish to me, but alas I was never able to hook up with the fish despite frequent visits to the spot under similiar conditions. Crazy damn fish.

Hey, it's winter. Any other interesting prop attack stories out there?

I have seen it happen twice. Once while night fishing then another time early season in like june. The one that hit the minn kota in june didnt make it. It put a huge gash across the top of the fishes head and the fish floated up to the surface it was like a 45 incher too. too bad. I think it follwed in my bait then saw the prop and nailed it.

Yes this is a strange happening, was on Eagle we were casting a spot where we had a huge fish up, after not bringing the fish up. We decided to head in for lunch, I go to pull up my pinpoint and low and behold he's there bumping my lowing unit on my trolling motor. Dropped the bait in the water but he wanted the trolling motor.

Good luck

My question is this, the couple guys who had their trolling motors hit, did you have sonar on them?

I had a low 40 do that to me on Tippecanoe ealier this summer.  I was sure the fish was hot on my bait at first. Then it veered off and went right for the motor.  She had her mouth open and at the last minute I took my foot off the motor and she turned within inches of chomping the motor.

A few years ago while fishing The Valley,I had a low 40's hit the Pinpoint . Heard and felt a little bump in an area I knew was clean only to glance down and see the fish sliding off the lower unit! The motor was off at the time. Weird. Steve

I've never had a fish hit my TM, but I was on a small carry in lake at one time walleye fishing. I had a little 14' aluminum boat. I was anchored on a spot catching some nice walleyes, when I looked down into the water, and saw about a 40-42" pike staring at the end of one of my oars that was in the water. I grabbed the big guns, and she wouldn't take. Maybe, I should have put trebles on the oar.

Kevin

Yes, I had a transduce on the lower unit and the unit was turned on. Don't know if that had anything to do with the hit...but might have.

I remember Steve Heiting writing about an encounter like this on Eagle Lake, and he wrote that all of the trolling motor hits he's heard of were directed at Minn Kota trolling motors. Maybe that is because 9 out of 10 trolling motors sold in musky country are Minn Kota, or maybe some of these fish are attracted by the sound/pitch of this particular brand. The fish still aren't talking.

Yup. Had it happen to me. Was fishing a Forest County WI. lake five days before leaving for LOTW. Making sure everything worked OK. MinnKota PD50/Lowrance flasher. Both units were on. Had a mid 40s fish follow hard into the figure 8. It came out of one of the turns and nails the trolling motor. Trolling motor starts shaking wildly. One of the fins was broke off about half way. My heart sank as I knew I would have an adventure locating a new prop!!!! I now ALWAYS carry a spare for my trolling motor. You never know. It could happen to you :-D
