Like the title says what bass rods have you used for musky? I'm looking at getting a heavy duty rod for bass fishing. It will be used for frogs, punching into the slop, heavier pitching/flipping, and texas/ Carolina rigs. I think a rod like this could translate nicely for the big bass/ light musky lures when really downsizing and still having the backbone for the fight. I'll be using 65lb braid for this setup anyways.
Any of you have any experience you'd like to share?
Do you use a leader when bass fishing when musky are around? What type if you do?

Thanks in advance

I’ve had 2rods custom built from Rain-shadow Blanks. Both 8’6”. 3/4-2. ounce lure weights. You can achieve the same results W/ bass Flipping Sticks.

Yes, fished many bass tournaments W/ Wire. Won Several Pitching Creatures. Wire Slices Weeds fast and efficient. 7 Strand, 19 Strand, or 49 Strand. All do the job! Big Bass don’t care if you use wire. Especially in a cloudier water.

My small bait rod is a Fenwick bass flipping rod. It's labeled extra heavy, but that is a bass designation. It's really equivalent to a medium heavy musky rod. I have a Curado 300 E with 65 pound braid, on this rod. It's perfect for the lures I throw with it. Not sure if I've had any over 50" on it, but certainly no issues with 4 footers.

My heavy bass small musky setup is a 7'6" BPS flippin stick I got on sale for 20 bucks. I have caught quite a few musky up to 48" on it even on the 8. I have used a calcutta 200b and a Garcia revo S on the rod with 40lb braid.

I got a rainshadow 8' swimbait rod I built on. Also built on 2 northfork blanks that are heavy swimbait blanks rated to 8 ounces. They all fish really nice and are light.

As I get older the more I use my light muskie combo, a St. Croix Legend Elite 7'11" Heavy Bass rod with a Lexa HD 300 high spd. reel. My shoulders like it.

I should add that I got a nice discount on the rod from the St. Croix store's "B" rack in Park Falls. It makes for a nice day trip to visit that store during off season.

A Shimano Expride A 7'11' XH is an amazing rod. Pair it up with a Tranx 300.

Daiwa Kage 8'6" XH with the new Daiwa Tatula 300 is a sweet combo too.

Lots of good options out there. The rod im lookin to get will primarily be a bass rod, but I'd like to use it for smaller lures like a rattle trap, mepps musky killer, rapala husky jerk, 5" swimbaits. A few places around here that I bass fish also have the toothy critters so if I see some while I'm out I'd like to toss for them without lugging extra equipment with me. I also don't want to spend alot of money on this rod and reel because I'm probably going to beat the $### out of it lol. Frogging and digging into heavy cover, especially when the summer heat and weed growth hits. I thought about getting a light musky rod but it would be a noodle and not nearly as sensitive plus weigh more. A couple rods i was looking at were

Dobyns fury 735 or 805
Irod Bubs punch rod 7115 or Fred's magic stick 745
Lews speed stick 745 or 765
Shimano slx 745 or 765

Any experience with any of these??

They are all heavy or extra heavy in power with enough backbone for smaller treble or big jig hooks.

I have a 7’ H st croix bass rod with a Curado 201 and 30 lb stealth. It’s my go to set up for tigers and I’ll also use it in the early season when downsizing. It’s my favorite way to fish for muskies, but it’s limited in that it won’t handle larger baits. Works great for 6” size baits like baby DR’s, smaller phantoms, whopper ploppers, med jigs, etc. Biggest so far is a 45” tiger that ate in the figure 8. No problem handling that size fish.

Thanks for all the replies! I ended up ordering a dobyns fury 765 flip with 1/4-2 oz weight rating. It looked like it had a stout backbone with about 20% tip. Unfortunately at this point in the year by the time I get it, it will just be sitting until the ice melts. I will give a review sometime this summer after some use for anyone that might be interested.

If you don’t want to lose a trophy musky, use appropriate musky leaders. I had a trophy musky hit my bass setup and I only had 20lb fluoro leader (for bass) and it cut the line just as I was about to net it. I was devastated. Now I put 80lb mono leaders on all my bass setups...which will probably hurt my bass fishing but oh well.
