Posts: 2024 | It's the end of the season and folks are out looking for an edge in muskie fishing. Whether it be through electronics, new techniques, or baits. Personally, I could use a slight edge in all the above mentioned fields. However, the easiest might be the bait category. There are a lot of baits out there and I'd like to hear from you folks what sets these lures apart from others. For example, I've been looking at getting a Pacemaker. Why would I want to buy a Pacemaker over say, a Top Raider? What sets this bait apart from the others? How about Big Daddy's? They look an awful lot like Suicks or Bobbies. So, what's the difference? How about the Slammer Drop Belly Glider? Looks similar to a Magic Maker. What's the difference? My point is there are a lot of SIMILAR looking lures out there, but with DIFFERENT actions. All I'm trying to do is find out what attributes these different baits have that set them apart from others. Also, if anyone would like to add baits that I haven't mentioned please feel free as the above mentioned were just off the top of my head. Thanks much!

The lip ripper has alot of roll and will twitch quite well. h2os2t lures are unique and there just isn't anything like them out there. The punisher glider is just a nice glider and very easy to use.

Posts: 1462 Location: Davenport, IA | I've got answers for some of those examples: Topraider vs. Pacemaker... completely differnt noise. the pacemaker has a sound unlike any topwater bait I've ever used. Its definetly worth buying. Big Daddy vs. suick and bobbie: I don't have a big daddy but I have a widowmaker t-bone jerkbait and unlike the suick and bobby you dont' have to spend hours tuning it to work perfectly. Maye the big daddy is like that, but I don't know. Slammer drop Belly vs. magic maker: you have to have both. The slammer works best at a slow speed and when you pause it it wobbles a lot downwards. The magic maker works best really fast. Late spring its a really hot bait. heres another one I thought of: crane vs big game twitchbait. They are very simlar but the big game has more traditional colors and goes deeper than a crane. I use both.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I noticed on my Pacemaker it has three sets of trebles. The Middle set of trebles has 1 barb cut off. I think the idea is so that the middle treble clangs against the rotating blade. If I recall correctly the Top Raider is plastic and has a rattle. Other similar baits(to me) are the Top Kick, Tallywhacker and Awaker. All three of those run slightly different and have different sounds, all are made of wood. Visibly all 5 of the above look similar. I think the Awaker floats higher in the water, the Top Kick lower and the Tallwhacker in between.(I may have the Tallywhacker and Top Kick reversed..).

Posts: 7038 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | MY FEELING is that baits are tools, and different people like to use different tools for different things; ie. what you like a bait for is different than what others will like or dislike it for. Big Daddy K: dives deep, wiggles, but not that great a pull pause "workable" dive and rise vs. a suick or bobbie (which though in the same family, [imho] arent nearly the same bait.) Paceamker vs. Topraider: different sound, different water pushing. Each have their place, I dont have a pacemaker, but have fished with guys who do, and it isnt better or worse than a TR, just different. Slammer Drop Belly vs. Magic Maker: I use the Slammer more for covering water from 4-9ft deep, whereas the MM seems to be more easily fished from 1-3 ft. deep. The Slammer is much heavier, will sink faster, and cant be worked as aggressively as the MM. The MM seems made for a medium to fast pace. Both catch fish, but seems as though they are meant for a different style of glide baiting. Hope this helps...in the end, you sometimes just have to buy baits, they are crap for you, and then OFF TO THE SWAP BOARD!

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have to agree with Slamr's general idea that baits are part of a system or technique, and are a tool as a result. Most of the gliders have a 'personality', and have application for each. Even Bucktails are different depending on the builder. I am VERY particular about topwater, and find that certain baits produce under certain conditions, while others shine at other times.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | I have to aggree with these post each bait is a little different. Sometimes the fish want that difference, sometimes they do not care. It is hard to figure what one lure (a little wiggle here, a little waggle there) does that triggers muskies to bite. Some lures that look the same and one works and one does not. I make my own and I use other stuff also because of that.
