Location: Red House WV | Does anyone have trouble using the Power Pro class of braids on the older Abu-Garcia's? I have 6500 that I bought in the mid 80's. Last time I used a super braid on it things got ugly real fast. I remember shortly after the braids came out Abu-Garcia was advertizing some type of new tripple line crossing so the braided line would not dig in as much. So I have just used 50lb. Magna Thin on it & it stays in the rod locker. It may well have been that I did not spool it on correctly. Thanks |

Location: God's Country......USA..... Western Wisconsin | Esox, you will find that all "super braids" are not created equally. Some are a more rounded braid while others are flater. These flater lines dig in badly. Also most of us have had some trouble with the 30 and 50 pound test. This is because the diameter is so thin that it tends to dig in on itself. I personally have gone to nothing less than 65 and 85 pound braid in both Power Pro and Tuff XP. The Power Pro seems to be a little rounder to me but this maybe just an opinion rather than fact. I would not go with anything less than 65# anyway. No need to go smaller when fishing for Muskies that I can see. I do have a couple of spinning rods set up with 50# and these seem to work just fine. Location: Chicago, Beverly | I reccomend putting a bcking line on the reel. With my 65lbs Tuff Line I either use a mono backing or 36lbs Musky Master. Seems to work for me. I tried superlines when they first started getting popular, but never had a line backing the siuperline. Had MEGA trouble. Started using backing and troubles went away. Usually they reccomend a mono for the backing but through experimenting I found the Musky Master will work also. I use a blood knot to connect the two lines. |

| I have a couple older abu's that I use all the time, made in 83-86. I've always used backing (10# mono) and never had a problem. I have a large spool of the cheapest mono I could find that I use just for backing. I've got a couple 5500s spooled with TUF 50# and the 6500s spooled with TUF 80#.
Only time I had trouble with a dig-in was on a different reel and that was because the line was freshly spooled and somebody else picked it up before I wound the line on with tension--I usually put on a deep diver and kick the boat into gear a bit as I strip the line off to the backing and then reel in under pretty good tension. |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | Hey Finbar, your method with stripping the line out works great. So far while doing that I have caught a 6lbs largemouth and a 41.5" Musky. Plus after doing so you are right, the line is wound a little tighter. I try and do that every time I put new line on. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Good advice here. I have several reels that are over 10 years old, and use the superlines on them with mono backing, no trouble. |
