Was looking at glide baits and noticed their is quite a few. With so many choices, which ones out there perform better? Big differences in price I've noticed. What rods are yinz using for these? I have some 6" phantom soft tails that I like and would also like to add some shad/pan fish styles as well. Which ones are better in current, which ones are better in calm lakes?

Thanks in advance

For a shad style bait it's hard not to find a better one than the modivator by muskyfix. I don't own any super expensive boutique gliders so I can't give an opinion on them.

For a while I was on the custom craze and can say honestly they don't catch anymore fish. I almost exclusively throw phantoms, hellhounds and motivators now when it comes to glides. I have been eyeing up the tap dancers, they have a more shad-like profile and Ive seen them catch fish.

Stick those soft tails on one rod and use your other rods for everything else. I use a Tackle Industries 7'6" XH with a jig ripper on it for the glides I toss, and 95% of those have a tail. m

Where do you get the motivators from? I can't seem to find them anywhere for sale. Just an old post from someone on here from 2015.

I was checking out those shums too, I think I read they are good for current .

I figure that most gliders I get will have a tail too, I like that flicker of it. I've been tossing the phantom 6s on a 7'6" mh mushstick that I have and it works for now but anything heavier i would have to toss on my 9'3" xh. Its rated 3/4-9oz but thats bs! Its more of a parabolic 1 1/2-5oz. I can see now that I'm going to probably get a rod just for gliders. Maybe another for lighter stuff and turn that mushstick into a catfish rod. Can't get rid of it though it caught me my pb bass (10+ lb tank) and first musky!!! How do you like that ti rod?

www.muskyfix.com for the modivators you will have to contact Ben. I have caught Muskies in a river with them.

I don't like to cast gliders that much but Phantom Softtails and Hellhounds are my gliders of choice.

Where are all of you tossing them? Strictly around cover, open water over dropoffs, only as throwbacks for follows, along shoreline, weed flats? Just trying to maximize my potential with them.

I like them over the tops of weeds, in and around rocks....I’m usually looking for structure pieces... I don’t throw them a lot in open water\ steep breaks.... I prefer other lure choices myself... but I’m sure others have done well with gliders in that scenario..... just a confidence or lack there of for me I guess

I have two Tackle Ind. rods and really like them both. The one I use most for gliders was won in a Muskies Inc chapter raffle. I overuse gliders and toss them just about everywhere, but 8 ft of water and less is best. Had one come up off a steep break last Saturday. Swiped at it, came around on it again, followed to the boat and went around 4 more times with it without contact. Gills flared, mouth ope in at least two of the runs. Gawd, I love gliders. m

That sucks it wouldn't commit but at least you saw something. Last 2 weeks around here it's been around 70 degrees with completely blue skies ( completely abnormal for Pittsburgh) and I haven't seen any fish other than minnows, saw 1 catfish caught, and heard of about a dozen trout caught, and your few typical fish jumping out of the water( maybe getting chased by skis).

I was looking at the ti 7'2" xh, slightly shorter, a little lighter, possibly has a little better snap to it, and like $30 cheaper which is nice. I've seen a few places up shipping costs to $110 recently. @%#$ing crazy!!!! Whats the biggest size glides you toss with that?
Thanks

One other point I will make for myself.... I’m only 5’8”, so for me to work jerbaits I like a shorter rod! I use a 7’6” for jekbaits and 8’6” for everything else....so that is something you might want to take into consideration too

Yeah I'm 6'1" and have used my 9'3" and 7'6" for them. I definitely prefer the shorter rod, somewhere between 7'-7'6". Its just alot easier and less taxing with better action.

I have used glides in most of these cases. I use them a lot in spring, move them fast, in very shallow water (0-3 feet), or in summer over weeds, I have also had great success using the larger sized ones in open water. I would find a few favorites and learn how they work, importantly the depth they run and how fast you need to work them to run your desired depth.

Toward the size and height thing, I am only 5'8 and I much prefer my 8'6 XH mojo for all of them compared to the 8' MH or H. I even use the XH on the 6" and just use the reel to glide more than the rod. I prefer the heavy rod because I fish GB and LSC primarily and a four footer makes a 8' MH feel like a pool noodle.

As a note I have broke a mojo on a 10" phantom, though it is a little on the heavy side for theses rods and I used it almost exclusively on LSC for the 2 years I lived there. For me some of the St. Crioix rods seem to be a little on the light side for listed weights.

I don't own a bait that I can't throw with it. Even the 14" Timberwolf. Get a jig ripper to go with it. m

Check out Musky Kombat Sidewinders or Musky Mania Magic Makers if you're looking for a tall/shad style bait. I also really love Hellhounds so I would recommend adding one of those to your arsenal. I normally fish gliders over shallow weeds and use them in Spring, Summer, and Fall. 8" hellhounds can be used all year but in general I will use smaller gliders (6" phantoms) in Spring and then bigger gliders in Fall (10" manta, XL squirko). I use and love the St. Croix Long Ranger for most of the gliders I use. It's 8'6" MH and is perfect for Hellhounds, phantoms, etc. For bigger gliders I will use the St. Croix Big Dawg. I actually work hellhounds, phantoms, etc more with the reel than I do the rod. Hellhounds are especially easy to use and will even glide on a straight retrieve.

I hear ya, thats funny about the pool noodle lol . I have 2 okuma evx and feel they aren't rated right either. Well at least the xh, its rated at 4-16 but I don't like to even toss a mag super d ( like 9oz) that I have, and even the regular shallow medusa seems to be at its upper limit. They need to come up with some regulated ratings. So you know exactly what you are getting. Its an absolute joke to be honest.! Thats why places like this are important to communicate through to weed out the bs. Who wants to buy 5 rods all rated the same to actually find one thats legit? Rant over ??

As far as Glide Baits, there are many out there. The ones I really like best are the Widowmaker Deadheads and Sidewinders. They make them both with and without a tail. Good quality finishes and everyone works right out of the package. They are also less expensive than many of the others. Made by good dudes who stand behind their products. You won't be disappointed. Note they also make some sensational bucktails too.

The t-bone is one heck of a jerkbait too. Where do they sell these lures used to love it when they came to the chicago musky show.

Todd M you can contact one of the owners, Speed Jones on Facebook. They have the video there of their new bait. They call it the Gar. When you pull it, the bait just does perfect lopes up and down. See the video if this is not clear what I am talking about. Anyway you can also reach Speed by calling (304) 634-5035. You are correct on the T-Bones. They are a fish catching son of a gun when the fish are looking for that action.

With the sales going on i pulled the trigger on a tackle industries 7'6" xh and was able to save a few bucks. ( what reels, inches per turn, 65lb or 80lb, are you all using for your jerkbait rods?) I also grabbed a 7 1/2" phantom ( siberian tiger) and a squirrely hellhound ( natural shad chartreuse belly) to give a try. Was trying to find some widowmakers and sidewinders ( love the paint jobs on these ) but they were all sold out. Im also looking at the tap dancers but didn't get any of those yet.
Got it all from team rhino outdoors. i like doing business with them. Also like how they have their own color schemes. They are 10% off right now if you didn't know.
Does chaos tackle have sales?

Hope everyone is having a good holiday or at least break from work
