Location: Downers Grove, IL | This may sound stupid but I can use some guidance. I'm going to be in the market for a boat next year that will be used 80% of the time for fishing Esox. However, that other 20% of the time will be more pleasure/family boating oriented including tubing and even skiing.
Thing is - I don't want a fish/ski boat, but rather, strictly a musky/fishing boat that can do the other stuff when needed. Any suggestions? What size motor would I need at a minimum? I'm also restricted by garage space - can't get anything longer than an 18 footer/motor in there. I'm trying to keep it within the $15-$20K range and used boats are an option. Thanks guys and gals.

Location: Lafayette, IN | Man, Jeff. There are so many nice floor plans in the deep-vee class of boats. You can surely find one that suits your needs. I bought a used Tracker Magna 19 and what impressed me about it's basic layout was the ability to modify it to suit my applications. I built a casting deck for the rear that I can easily remove. (see pic) With the deck out I can legally and comfortably take 10 people for a ride. With the deck in 3 people can fish and 1 person can sit at the console and relax. We even fished 4 casters in it a few times and got along great. Not the ideal but very comfortable non-the-less. Good luck shopping. Keep us posted......

Location: Chicago, Beverly | I would say the boats listed above by others should fit your bill well. Stuff also like alumicrafts, Lowe, Lund, Princecraft. As for motor, 70hp on up should get someone up on skis.
I reread the posts above, I missed the '18 without motor' post so edited out the stuff about less then 18.

Location: Woodstock, IL | I'll agree with the 1850 Fishhawk recommendation. My wife isn't one to fish; however she always joins me on the boat and relaxes with a book and a glass (bottle?) of wine. It meets all of my needs as a musky nut, yet she is very comfortable lounging on the boat as well. I have a 150 on the back and even with four adults, the boat planes instantly and cruises easily in the mid-40 mph range.

If I read that right, a 16" boat with the trailer tongue (even a swing tongue) and a motor (even tilited all the way down) wouldnt fit.
Get an exact measurement of the inside of your storage and we can go from there.
As far as a combo boat but 80% fishing, I agree with the others that a Fish Hawk from Crestliner would work great.
Depending on weight of the skiers, 90HP should be plenty. But if they are in their early teens, growing fast, might barefoot in a few years,wanna go faster,going to keep the boat for a long time,etc.etc. I would shoot for 125 minimum.
The length of boat you can store will dictate how many ponies you can get. |

Location: Hoboken, NJ / North Webster, IN | Don't know the price, and don't have one, but the Lund 1850 Tyee is made to be just what you're asking for. It's pretty much split down the middle as far as set up, so that may be a little too non-fishing for you, but it's worth checking out.

Am I getting too big for my britches? I don't want to have to angle a boat in there to make it fit. Of course, I'll look for a swing tongue trailer to save space.

| My 2002 Lund Angler SS fits in my 21' garage straight, with the swing tongue Eagle trailer. It has a 135 Optimax, and is a pretty good all around boat. Great for fishing, and with all 4 seats in it, it will contain my family, pull skiers and tubes just fine. Hole shot is excellent, and top speed somewhere from 52-58, depending on load.
BTW, it is for sale in the classifieds. Very muskie approved! |

| It's a 1700 Angler SS. Got a double wide garage door. And that is GPS speed. Eagle trailer is 102" wide.
Doubt me all you want 52. Plenty of guys on this site have been in the boat, and have seen the speed fully loaded. Kly saw 54 on LOTW this year. With nothing but 4 gallons of fuel, well...... let's just say, it's scary how fast it is. |

| I believe you shep, I get 43 on the gps in my 1750 fishhawk with a 115hp w/ a 9.9 four stroke kicker hanging off the back and loaded out with gear and two people.

I would look at the 1850 fishhawk, They came out the 1850 in 2002 and I purchased my boat in 2001 and when I went to the dealer for it's checkup they had one on the lot and I can tell you that as much as I love my 1750 I really liked the layout of the 1850.

Location: Woodstock, IL | Shep - What prop do you have on that thing? I usually don't hit speeds much higher than 45-46 with my 150 on the 1850, according to GPS. My speedo has hit 50 before though. The highest I've achieved so far is about 48. |

| I have the Merc 23P Lazer II. Motor is in the 3rd hole, I believe. The dealer did a lot of prop testing, and setup. Pretty awesome ride when you only got about a foot of boat in the water! I know somebody with the same boat, and a 115 4S, and he claims 50 GPS with light load. I believe him. Seems this boat just gets up and goes. |

Location: Downers Grove, IL | Hey All , Shep you probably know - what's the difference between the Lund 1700SS and the 1775 Tournament Series? Boat dimensions are identical. Any idea in difference in cost?
I've got alot of work to do, but being my first boat, I am going to go w/ aluminum - I don't want to be honing my navigational/boat control skills on a fiberglass hull.
This is pretty fun - thanks for all of the great input guys.

| The 1775 os the ProV Series. Layout is different, and it has center rod dtorage. Hull is basically the same, but the ProV has thicker hull material, and the IPS II vs IPS for the Angler. ProV has some more features as standard, 2 Livewells vs 1, is a couple hundred pounds heavier, and has a higher HP rating. I chose the Angler, because I didn't need 2 livewells, and liked the horizontal rod lockers for muskie fishing better. The Angler also costs less than the ProV, but I'm not sure ho much. I didn't really get that far into the ProV to get it priced.
There are a lot of good boats out there, so have fun deciding and buying! |
