Posts: 62 | You can only choose between Illinois or Wisconsin. Where would you go to catch a 40" - 20 lbs Musky? This will help settle a small dispute I am having with my good friend Jimmy Hinshaw. He says Illinois because of the Shad (Evergreen-Shelbyville-Kinkaid) the fish grow faster. I say Wisconsin because of the greater population in terms of acres, more water, more fish, better odds of contacting the fish you want. What do you think? I understand that Kentucky, Ohio, Pennslyvania, Indiana, Michigan, etc. all have viable musky populations and given the choice, most anglers would choose the best water they know. Myself, I would choose Minnesota. I am strictly asking about Illinois and Wisconsin for the sake of this dispute. Thanks for understanding and for your thoughts. Posts: 186 Location: West Chicago, IL | Chris, I'm gonna have to side with Jimmy on this one. I think there is by far a greater percentage of lakes in Illinois have a chance to grow a 40" 20 lb fish than in Wisconsin. Hop

Posts: 550 Location: So. Illinois | I'd also have to agree with your friend. I have two 42" both going over 20 lbs this year in Illinois. I have spent about equal time on WI lakes and have not been able to produce as the Illinois lakes have. Chief

Posts: 5874 | That's easy. WI Just gotta find the right water, and get the right fish to bite! hehehe I think I had 4 this Oct-Nov that were 40-42" that went over 20 lbs. Never fished Ill, but I am pretty confident that in the fall in WI, I can CPR a few 20 lbers. Edited by Shep 11/30/2003 6:37 PM

Posts: 544 Location: Alsip, Il | After of having 25 years plus of going after these critters, I would now have to say for the average joe, Illinois now would be easier to get a 40 incher 20lbs., even though I would rather fish north. Al

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have a few 40 inch fish that crowd 20# out of Oneida County waters, but the average here is 40"= 16#. SOme of the Cisco waters put out fat fish, but I don't fish them much because of habit.

Posts: 827 Location: Minneapolis,Minnesota | Thumbs down to Illinois....skinny fish everywhere you look for the most part. Yes I know there has been some nice ones taken out of the Bowl this year (mainly by Ralph) but on average most fish I see look skinny. Hell even the state record looks kinda snaky to me. I can think of a half dozen lakes in Vilas and Oneida right away (Cisco and non-Cisco)that I would give a hell of a chance at putting out a 40" 20#er or larger with little effort. I also have a hunch that Grindstone, Lac Courte Oreilles and "The Chip" can easily produce a 40" 20#er to a knowledgable musky hunter. May not be the easiest lakes but have big fish in them for sure. I would give Pewaukee or Little Green more of a chance, I've seen two 30# fish on Little Green this spring and there has been multiple twenty five and thiry pounders taken on Lil' G this year granted they were larger than 40". I don't know how that little lake puts out such fat fish? I think you would have to be crazy or live there (and I do) to say Illinois. Edited by Phish Killer 12/1/2003 12:27 PM

Posts: 827 Location: Minneapolis,Minnesota | Thad, you're right bud, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about. I don't even fish at all, never have casted a line. I'm sure they are bigger in those man made nuclear reactor cooling pits. They may even glow in the dark? Who cares? Illinois rules, now go fish! Edited by Phish Killer 12/1/2003 12:57 PM
