A look at my regs reveals that the musky season in da yoop (Michigan's Upper Peminsul) runs all the way to Feb 28. So, what techniques would anyone recommend for aproacing the fish through the ice. I was thinking that deadsticking a stiff ice rod, with a good small reel, loaded with 12#test and a 20# floro leader. A quick strike rig using 2 strong #12 trebles and a 4-6" sucker. I could jig (pimple with meat) a walleye flash bait nearby to draw the musky in to the area, hit the musky as soon as she starts running.

A tip up is another option, but I would rather use a reel with a good drag than my bare hands.

What do you think?

Hey Ranger,

Can't help with the ice but one thing you may want to give a shot at is the menominee. It is still open right now by the gorge and probably will be for awhile. There's some big northerns and few skis. If I had a boat that's where i'd be.

I've had have some trouble with the 7 strand. I'm not a big fan of the crimps, but if you got a knot that is strong I'd love to hear er.

Hi Ranger- You know I'm a bit biased. But, you seriously should try jigging a sinking Zam or Zalt - They have terrific erratic action when jigged.

Ranger, a buddy of mine uses some fish wood carvings to attract them to the area. He doesn't have any hooks on them, as we can't fish for them in Wisconsin at that time, but just to seem them come and look at the decoy is pretty cool.

I would say, maybe jig a fuzzy duzzit in one hole, and maybe hang a sucker or 2 in a nearby hole on a real with a clicker. That would be like a normal set up, but on an iceboat, vs soft water.
Good Lungen,
Joel

Good suggestions, thanks.

Jake, what access are you talking about? Sturgeon River near Laretto? Also, what would you think of fishing at the base of hydroelectric falls? That access in Niagra has lots of current so will freeze up last, and I could troll shallow baits up to the falls and then cast the deep waters.

I wish the Brule was still open, but I doubt it. Maybe I'll call Lance Lucky in the morning, he moght know.
