Posts: 114 | 4 of us are doing a week at Andy Meyers all guided adventure in August. Because we won't be bring a boat, we need to figure out the best ways to transport all of our rods: 12 - 14 musky rods up to 9.5' and 8 spinning rods. I'm looking into PVC pipe, retail rod cases like Plano and thinking of contacting R & H or St. Croix to see if they may sell some to me. Would be strapping them to roof rack on my SUV. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance.

Location: Athens, Ohio | I've seen the PVC work well, you may want to put them in cloth rod sleeves first, tho, to keep them from banging around. The other thing you could do is what I did once for my pickup. Take a couple 2x4's and screw rod rack wall holders on them. Attach the 2x4's then to your roof racks. We had 9 footers sticking out the back a ways on my Ridgeline from Ohia to Minnesota with this method but it worked well and if you cover the reels they can be all set to cast when you get there. m

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Having a roof rack should make it easy. For that amount I'd probably 2nd the pvc idea and wrap rods with a thin sheet, newspaper, etc to keep the blanks and guides from banging together for the long trip. I always save my long tod tubes that rods cone in too in case i want to sell a rod I've bought or built. They work well too but are cardboard, and if you hit rain the pvc with a cap won't be affected.

Saw a set up a guy had put together using pvc tubing for rods. To keep them from banging together, he glued together several layers of corrugated until he had it about an inch thick, the same diameter as the inside of the pvc. Then used a hole saw to cut out holes from the corrugated to place the butt of the rods in. Did something similar for the tips. The key was creating a thick layer of corrugated and cutting it to fit snug inside the pvc, same with the holes for the rod butts. I didn't talk to him after he got back from trip, but see no reason why it would not hold up.

Posts: 410 Location: one foot over the line | I use a 6"x 9.5' schedule 30/34 piece of pvc (green sewer pipe, lighter). 6" rubber fernco cap on one end and a 6" threaded adapter on the other end. I put my rods in sleeves and I have 2' long pieces of 1/2 inch foam pipe insulation that I slide over all the tips. When I stagger rods and tie the ends, I believe that I can fit 12 in my tube.
