Are most of you guys documenting your days Musky fishing with log books or don,t you bother?I tried in 2002 to do this, but after fishing 14 hour days, eating dinner, and having a few beers when we got off the lake, I couldn,t seem to get it done.I tried a different approach in 2003, which worked real well.I used a tape recorder, which I carried in my pocket to document the whole day about follows, lures used, weather, wind direction, etc.I had picked up a "Fishing Diary and Record Book" from Canada that has all of the catagories already listed. All you have to do is fill it in, which is nice and professional. So when I had time, I filled it in from my tape recorder, and was surprised at how much I had forgotten from the day before.I wish I had started this years ago, because there is a lot of usefull information in a weeks trip to Canada that you will forget.

I guess I don't get out enough to justify the book (or catch enough fish).
I have recorded each fish caught by location on my weatherproof map of the lake with a sharpie. On the map is just a number. I mark the spot on the lake on my gps and put it on the map at home. Then on the puter I log the number, date, time, weather (inc barometer), lure, how caught, depth of water, etc. I have only done this in 2003 so there is not enough data to learn much from yet. I plan to continue the same method until the lake map is un-readable (2050? ha ha). I would love to guide someday, might only be a dream, but it sure would be a valueable database of info.

This is oen thing i have committed to using beginning next year. There is no way you can look back and remember every detail of every trip and what worked when etc. Using a log, i think, should help me greatly. I know i am going to notice things, when i look back at the log, that should help me for future fishing that i would not have if i didnt have a log.

I have always wanted to do this, but at the end of a long day it is also the last thing that I want to do. I worked at Indian Trail resort for John Detloff and he kept a diary. He let me read a couple of his older ones and he had every little detail listed. If you have ever read Time On The Water, I would have to compare them to that. The tape recorder idea I bet would work great, then when you get time get it on paper.

I do keep a fairly detailed log on an excel spreadsheet. I keep track of all weatherand water conditions, hours fished, lakes, spots, follows, fish caught, and effective baits. Once you set up the spreadsheet it only takes a couple of minutes to enter the appropriate info in the fields.
