Posts: 305 Location: Illinois | I am a very weak jerk bait fisherman. It is a go to tactic for some guys and is the best presentation in many situations. Up until this year, with about 100 lifetime muskies under my belt, none of them had ever been caught on a jerkbait or a jig. I broke my jerkbait cherry this year after deciding I would throw it until I caught one. I logged over 50 hours on the water without a hook up until it happened. Still, the fact remains I am a poor jerkbait fisherman. I also have not tried soft plastics enough and need that in my aesenal. I do well trolling and casting crankbaits. I am a decent topwater and bucktail fisherman, but I am only half as good a fisherman as I should be. What are your strenghts and what are do you need to work on to become better musky fisherman? I think it might be a good idea if some members on this board fished together and showed each other their specialy. We would all improve to some degree. With that in mind, Next season I would be more than willing to take someone out and have them teach me their jerkbait or soft plastic method. In return I can show trolling or some topwater tips or I can just shut up and fish.

Posts: 20281 Location: oswego, il | My strength are in trolling, fishing hard, erratic presentations(zalts, gliders ect) and thinking outside the box. My weaknesses are resivour muskies, algae blooms, changing water clarity and fishing very thick millfoil.

Posts: 148 Location: DES MOINES, IOWA | Mike, we are the same page with jerkbaits, and I don,t troll that much because of the area, I predominantly fish.My strength is locating Muskys, but I need a higher amount of hook ups to really put some big numbers in the boat.I feel I am strong in weed/slop fishing, and in the use of Topraiders in many different type of structures. However, my real strength is I am a good listener, and I don,t allow an ego to limit my developement. I talk to anybody who fishes Muskys, whether they have fished one year or 40 years to see what they are doing thats working.I read as much as I can,and I use these boards to find people who are strong in the areas ,where I need work. However, I am doing things that are working for me, that aren,t recommended by the pros, because I have been doing them before I read that I shouldn,t.You are definitely going to do well Musky fishing, because you are never going to be satisfied, not if you keep evaluating your game every year, and working on your weaknesses.Good Fishing.

Posts: 196 | My weakness is I fish shallow and up tight to structure. Also, I fish mostly action water. Put those two together and I catch a lot of smaller muskies. My strength is I am new to muskies and am getting on fish and having a blast doing it. And because I fish a lot of new lakes and am willing to fish unpopular water I have found a few good lakes.

Posts: 1023 Location: Lafayette, IN | My strengths are persistance, thinking ahead, boat control, and willingness to fish with methods and in places I'm not accustomed to. As much as I hate to admit it, I should've put more muskies in the net by now. Good thing I like working the baits. Hey, there's always next time out, right?..... "Teach me more, y'all."

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I enjoy reading the water and controlling the boat, jigs and creatures, surface baits, gliders, twitch baits, and spinnerbaits. I do VERY well on rivers and reservoirs, and small to huge lakes, long as I can control drift and find fish. My weakness is trolling. I am very inexperienced at that, and intend to get Mike's Extreme out on the water at least one time next year to learn a bit.

Posts: 1536 Location: God's Country......USA..... Western Wisconsin | Very strong on the jig and creature. Love to slow roll spinnerbaits. I am one of the best on the figure 8 that you will find. I really like it when they come to the boat. I like to see 'em bite. Getting better with the jerk baits and gliders but still need to work on these. Pretty good on a bucktail. Still pull to quick when they bite a topwater. I am absolutley lousy as a troller and I do not fish live bait. That about sums it up except that I like the weed edge a lot and fish the rocks as much as I can. Good at boat control and seem to be able to find the fish pretty well. Been having trouble landing them lately. I hope that comes to an end soon.

Posts: 626 Location: ashtabula ohio | i think my best strength is patience. totally working over a spot that you know is holding something till it gives. my boat position still stinks. i end up on top of a spot when i should be 30 yds from it. also learning different jerks is fun...flipping suicks.

Posts: 617 Location: Clintonville, WI | Bad: clueless trolling, contracted "bait change-itis" long ago, don't feel comfortable with my game planning and have trouble adjusting plans if needed, identifying patterns, bad days still get to me Good: will fish 'til I drop, solid with jerk/glide baits and top water, willingness to try or learn new water and techniques, work hard on the basics (good casting, good rod positions, figure 8s or Js, maintain reels, use good knots, sharpen hooks, add split rings, etc), and excellent on the net Edited by BigMo 11/12/2003 11:42 PM

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | Strengths: I am able to fish for days at a time without tiring. When my trolling motor pedal is working, I am great at boat control, and can put myself on the spot I want to be on. I am very adaptable, and willing to try new things. I can also twitch a mean minnowbait. My trolling is coming along well this year, thanks to some pointers from the Extreme One. Weeknesses: I can't pin a fish on a sucker to save my life this fall. The only one I did, was just too hungry and wouldn't give the meat up, didn't even hook him. I will prevail though. I need some practice with the electronics, and getting them to read what is down there. That will make a HUGE difference in my fishing. I also need to spend more time with the plastics. 15 mins an outing just won't get the confidence. Good lungen, Joel

Posts: 124 Location: Rice Lake,WI | Strengths- Erratic and aggressive power presentations, lots of change ups, boat control and locating fish in open water adjacent to structure (sometimes adjacent) fishing in the worst mama nature throws and persistent as a frickin' goat man! Weaknesses- don't troll so I have all kinds of stuff to learn there, jigs I hate em' even for bass. Spend too much time working the abyss and not where I should be sometimes. Short fuse when certain anglers pull the dick manuever on the water etc. I'm sure there's more but I'd rather b.s. about the first!

Posts: 136 | My biggest strength is trolling. i have spent a lot of time doing it, and have caught a lot of fish. this year, 5 fish over the 50" mark came trolling. But more importantly, i have learned in 15 plus years of doing this, i have learned when to cast Vs. trolling. My only weaknes is trolling, i do not troll more then 10-12 feet deep. I wanted to do some deep fall trolling this year, but was not able to do so. In casting, i am a total JERK!!! I love those jerkbaits, burts and suicks have taken a lot of fish up to 50". I also do well on twitches. But, my biggest weakness, please dont laugh, i have not caught a legal on a bucktail in 15 years and only one on a surface bait

Posts: 305 Location: Illinois | In reading through this thread it amazes me what vast differences there are in the fisherman on this board. It probably in linked to the different bodies of water fished but it seems everybody has a preferance in fishing style.Jay, thanks for the encouragement. There is always hope.(I was going to say wait until next year but as a Cubs fan it made me want to puke)
