I am in the market for a new trolling motor. I really like the low profile pad of the Minn Kota Power Drive but the durability of the Maxxum has caught my interest.

What kind of pad does the Maxxum utilize, is it awkward running in high winds and big waves?

Does the Maxxum pad have a continuous on?

How long is the cable on the Maxxum, will it reach the back of my 17' boat?

Do I need more than 65# thrust for a 1750 Fish Hawk?

Norm,

I have a 65# Auto Pilot on my 18 1/2' Crestliner and the only time I had a problem was out on Leech in 4'ers, other than that I have never had a problem with the 65#. I'm pretty sure Min Kota is coming out with a 74# this year.
I run mine from the back of the boat, they should be the same length so you will not have a problem there.

I have an Autopilot, but have controlled boats that have a Maxxum. I like the low profile pedal as well as you, but they simply don't hold up. I have now junked 3 pedals in 3 years. Need to buy my 4th for next year.

The Maxxum foot pedal to me is way too big. Takes up a lot of room, and if you don't use a buttseat like I don't it sucks! I found with very little time that my ankle would get sore in high winds. Do they really need to make that pedal that big? I don't think it has a very long cord either. I'm pretty sure only the low profile pedal comes with the long cord.

I will soon be looking for a new trolling motor too, and hope Minn Kota fixes the foot pedal thing before I buy my nest motor.

Norm,

No way the Maxxum will reach the back of your boat. The Maxxum is a cable drive, and you can only run from the front. The foot pedal is rather large, and your foot will be up about 6-8". Some people swear by them.

I have the Auto Pilot 65# on my 1700 Angler SS, and it has plenty of power. Minn Kota is coming out with a 74# version of the AP and PD this year. It has the 18' cable, and you can also get the Co-Pilot add on, for remote control. Also, I highly recommend the Universal Sonar. Very clean installation with no wires hanging around the shaft.

Cisco, I am still on my first foot pedal. When I am not using it, I put it in the storage compartment up front. Only takes a second to take off/put on, and it's protected from the elements. I have heard of some problems with them, but not sure what is happening to them.

The problem I have is it quits turning to the right every time. I've taken it apart to clean, and there isn't much to it. Just a piece of plastic sliding over another piece to push on the contacts. The problem is the plastic pieces don't slide the best. I've cleaned and lubed it, but that only helped for a few extra weeks. Tried cleaning it again, but now it won't work at all.

I have the Auto Pilot with the low profile foot pedal and I swear by it, the new 74# thrust will be going on my new rig.

Travis, you must have the Nascar edition Minn Kota, only turns left.

Actually guys I didn't realize Minn Kota was coming out with a 74# PD this year. That solves everything. The last thing I want to do when upgrading for more thrust is to short change myself again. I'm almost positived the 65 would be enough, but like Tim the Toolman says----More Power arhhhh arhhh arhhhh.

Norm,

I believe someone said that the newer PD's have a much faster response time than the old ones too. Seems like someone also said the response time was adjustable. That's a great improvement right there. But I own 2 of the older ones and haven't had a minute's trouble with either one. Keep the batteries charged up. That's one of the big secrets to good compass performance. Unplug your motor before charging too.

I've had nothing but trouble from the AP's that I've owned (4).  I even gave them one last try on the new boat that I bought about a month ago.  On the maiden voyage the trolling motor started spinning to the right... no wind, no waves, no excuses!  I had the dealer change it out to a Maxxum.

Like several of the earlier posts, the pedal will never reach the back unless your boat is about 6 inches long.  And the comment about using the pedal without a "bump seat" is correct as well - I wouldn't even attempt it.  The reason I went with the Maxxum was I like to fish rather than fight the problems.  I also like to know where the motor is pointing without looking down at the head.
