Location: SE, WI. | It’s really sad to see a fish like this handled the way it was. Musky, like when Sturgeon, R out of season and should be immediately released. No measuring, No photo show! This fish should of been grabbed by the gill plates, hooked removed while still in the water, or line cut, and immediately pushed back down the hole. Who knows how long it swam on the ice while someone finally retrieved a tape measure. Then the photo show while fins, and eye membranes freeze up. There are photos of musky 27”-34” lying on the ice in SE WI., allowed to flop on the ice,W/ mouth spreaders in their mouth, on days that are 1-2 degrees. The public really needs to be educated that fish,Out of season, need to be immediately released!!! Sad...

| Agree. While you can’t predict a fish like that ice fishing, you can tell he is not thinking about getting the fish back and more concerned about his pic. |

And back in the real world where 95% of ice fisherman aren’t going to be prepared for a 50+ inch musky and will be excited about the experience....nice fish! They were fishing mille lacs with large suckers for "giant pike". It's not the "real world where 95% of ice fisherman" are fishing. Sad show indeed......... But hey, don't judge, I'm sure they were forced to post it on Facebook...... |

| Kinda ridiculous they kept the fish out of the water that long while musky are out of season up here. Seasons are there to protect the fish and this guy has the fish sit on the ice for an inordinate amount of time just so he can get a pic. Buddy we get it you're pretending to fish for pike with 12" suckers but can you at least put the fish back so that it has some chance of surviving? Yeesh. |

| Let's not be too quick to crucify this guy. What percentage of the fishing population even knows what a muskie IS? What I heard on the video, from whomever was around was "hey, that's a muskie. Season is closed. You gotta put it back." And presumably from the guy who caught it "hey, get me a tape measure so I can get the fish back!"
No, they might not have handled the situation like most of us would, but I suspect if that was your average ice angler, that fish would be in the freezer right now.
Not clear from the video how long the fish was out of the water, but I'd bet most of us have had one out longer than that.

Give me a break with the drama over a mishandled fish. Same with the weight/length ridicule. Not everyone in the fishing community has a stick up their butt over release tools and fish handling like the internet musky community. Some people just want to hang out, have a few beers with friends and catch some fish. A video gets posted of guy catch what was probably a fish of a lifetime and he just gets dumped on over fish handling. Next week you will probably want support from fisherman like him to battle the evil lake home owners trying to get a bill through limiting musky stocking. |
