Location: Phoenixville, PA | Anyone know what kind of wood the original Dick Gries baits were made out of? I have always loved their buoyancy. They were very lively baits. |

Location: Not where I want to be! | If you're talking about the Striker, it was made from ironwood. The Topkicks were probably pine or cedar. |

| Some of the Phantom Ojibwas(cranks) were made of ironwood, but I do not believe the Striker was. |

I believe you are right. I have some original Strikers and they are way too buoyant to be ironwood. I don't think the minnow bait was ironwood either, However Peter Haupt did make a deep diving bait called the Ojibawa from ironwood. He made them one at a time. Ironwood is much too difficult to mass produce baits due to its hardness.
Like I said call Smitty and I'm guessing pine or cedar. I know Smitty knows Dick Gries personally and he know wood.
No mention of it on their packaging. See images.

| I knew Dick back in the day when Gander Mountain had its store in Wilmot Wisconsin, late 80' or 90's. Met him at a Chicago sports show and used him as a guide several times through the 90's. He took a big hit when Gander went bankrupt in the 90's, they paid him pennies on the dollar for the baits they owed him for. He worked for a local casino and then started to do some guiding again, as I recall anyway. I still have a few of his baits I bought from him directly. Topkick super twin has caught some nice muskies, still have a couple that are new or like new. Nice guy and a decent guide, was big into trolling until trolling was outlawed in Vilas and Oneida Counties. Haven't seen him since the 90's however. |
