A nephew? A car?

Unless things have changed, parental consent and a copy of your nephew's birth certificate should suffice.

I think it is great you are taking him.

The first thing you need to consider is getting across the border and getting back into the United States. I would always have a notarized letter stating from the parent that you have permission to take their child over the border into a foreign country. I would get them a passport, and also practice the questions they may need to answer at the border. Here are some examples: Where are you going? Where are you from? How long are you staying? They will usually look at each child and ask them the questions and may ask how they are related to you the driver. When you get to the border, take off your hats and sunglasses and roll down all the windows on the driver's side of the vehicle.

I took my son over the border with my brother once and with my buddy Donnie and his boys several times when they weren't teenagers yet and one of the funny questions we laugh about until this day is the border agent asking; "Who's your daddy"?

Next I would think about clothing. You are fishing so you don't need a lot or anything fancy. Enough pairs of underwear, socks, shirts and pants and a couple pair of shoes. Have a rain suit and a layer of long underwear as well to face any extremes. We once had it dip to freezing over the 4th of July on one of my trips with my son and brother and the long underwear helped the morning run.

Fishing gear is next. Although you may have more than enough, I like to make sure they, the child have at least one rod and reel and several lures that are their own, it gives them some pride.

Special food/snacks, their own pillow, a favorite blanket, a notebook and any special medications/glasses, sunglasses, hats and those are the basics.

Most people overpack, have some extra cash for a shopping trip for a lure, backpack, moccasins etc...

Finally with the phones we have now days you don't need to think about it, but a good camera is nice as well.

Good Luck and have fun!

Read carefully about consent letter. you might do a search like "requirements to take minor to Canada". I think I searched "take grandson to Canada". Be sure to read recommendations to include in consent form.

Lots of information available on internet. For example...……..

Hope that helps.

I took my nephew twice and this is great advice. I had a letter from his parents stating I had permission to take them, and that was all that was required 5 years ago. Make sure to roll down his window as well if he is in the back as they will ask him questions. Nothing major just the usual where are you going, are you here on your free will, etc.

Have fun and enjoy the trip!

Border guards do a good job looking out for youngsters. I have taken my own kids across the US/Can border many times and I always appreciated the extra questions the kids got.

^ This exactly. I took my nephew last year. We got all his docs in order in advance. His mother even contacted the Canadian Border Patrol in advance with questions. Both going and coming back, we were asked "how do you two know each other?". We didn't have any problems.
