Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | Chris and I are heading back up to Lac Seul in mid July. Less than 2 weeks out and the stomach swirls are starting. Big expectations this year. Last year Chris got into the 50 club with a cow. Really stoked! Anyone else getting up that way this year?

Posts: 1039 Location: North St. Paul, MN | Not to the east end, but the west side near McKenzie Bay. In your opinion why have the muskies not migrated west? We haven’t fished that east side since 2005, unfortunately. So it’s been 14 years to the west side, I throw musky baits for pike over there and never once had a musky encounter. And we had several BIG encounters on that east side. Edited by muskyroller 7/6/2019 1:17 PM

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | Ive seen some real monsters in the East side of the Lake. I really dont know why they just arent West at all. They just arent there. But we are going to be recording a session on scene and Ill ask our guide for the reasoning behind that. He has been up there for years so Im interested in the answer. Will let you know!

Posts: 63 | UglyPike - 7/4/2019 12:04 AM Good chance I will fish Lac Seul for a couple days or so while visiting friends in Kenora where I lived for 15 years. When working for the MNR there I had the opportunity to fish Lac Seul a handful of times. Muskie are present throughout it's waters but a little more difficult to locate on the western side in my experience. Fantastic fishery but a little hazardous at times in certain locations. I have depth contour maps if you are interested. Chris and I are heading back up to Lac Seul in mid July. Less than 2 weeks out and the stomach swirls are starting. Big expectations this year. But we are going to be recording a session on scene and Ill ask our guide for the reasoning behind that. He has been up there for years so Im interested in the answer. Will let you know! I asked this question of a few people from the area and they all had the same answer, the lack of current on the west end. The west end seems to be better known for its world class walleye fishery. UP, I will be waiting for your first hand report and looking forward to hearing your podcast. Best of luck to you!

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | Thanks for the tips and insights guys! We have to finish releasing our Muskie Odyssey Series which will run all Summer, then we will release the episode live from Seul after that series concludes. Interesting note on the current in the west part of the lake, that makes sense. LOTW, yeah Seul can be a grind. I dunno tho, I (Frank) just feel like I have a personal connection to that lake. First time I ever went on a muskie trip I had no guide or knowledge and went there and caught a monster on my own. More dumb luck than anything but it made me love that lake, that and the isolation of it all. I just love it. Last year we had a 50 in the boat as well....Thanks for the contour offer but I have a human contour map in the boat with me - Ben Beattie is our guide all week. He is a STUD! Cant wait for Sunday...

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | Fly home tomorrow. This lake...Wicked. High highs and low lows. It was trying at times. Maddening at other times. But we pushed through. We did well, all things considered. Ill post some pics when I get better connection. This lake...

Posts: 93 | Sweet! I will be looking forward to hearing all about it! Did you fly commercial airlines? I was wondering how you got your rods up there? Looks like I am going to have to ship ours up.

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | Yeah flew Porter out of Toronto City. My buddy and podcast partner Chris has a huge rod holder, big enough to fit our 9 foot one pieces in.

Posts: 93 | UglyPike - 7/21/2019 6:29 PM My buddy and podcast partner Chris has a huge rod holder, big enough to fit our 9 foot one pieces in. How about a photo or a brand name of that? I am currently fabricating a custom one that will hold 8 rods, no reels. I am assuming shipping via Fed Ex or other? And lets hear some more detail!

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | ok Ill talk to Chris and get the name of it for you no worries. Porter gives us a tackle box/rod combo for transport. As for detail...I dont even know where to start. Lac Seul is always impressive to me. Ive never gone and not seen something amazing happen. Doesnt mean any of it was easy - we do 11 hour shifts in the boat and we never go in for breaks. Its hard. We didnt get our biggest fish this year til the last hour or two of the trip. It was a tough grind. Weather was temperamental...I dunno though, we went through some adversity and part of me thinks you sort of have to in order for those highs to be so high. So much adrenaline and excitement when a nice fish hits. Its just the best. We'll have an episode up on the trip in about a week. If you havent, check out the video link I posted. It shows a decent snapshot of some of the fish we saw.

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | MuskyMidget - 7/31/2019 3:46 PM How many muskies did you guys catch? Impressive video! Thanks! We JUST finished recording the podcast which is a review of the trip - the hilights and lowlights lol. It will be released tomorrow and can be found on any podcast app or iTunes or www.theuglypike.ca or www.uglypikepodcast.com We boated 7 but had a ton of follows, well I had a ton of follows. I could and should have converted more of them but the bucktail I used was so beat up from a previous strike that it wasnt running right and I think that turned a lot of followers off the bait. Regardless an awesome trip!

Posts: 93 | Just listened to the Podcast, sounds like it was a good trip. Some hard, some easy, all good. I am looking forward to my week with Ben in September, beating Seul's water hoping she gives up a monster!

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | Yeah it was a great trip. The lows make the highs so much more worth it. Seul has never let me down. She tested me in every way but always delivers in the end. You just have to give it all you got. Let us know how it goes please. Best of luck.

Posts: 101 Location: Niagara on the Lake, ON | one more thing - if you listened to the episode I talk about the day I had about 12 follows. I should have converted a few of those but the bait I was throwing was damaged and not running well. Im sure that cost me some fish. 2 of which were giants.

Posts: 93 | I will be looking at Ben for bait selection. ![]() Did you ever have the discussion with him about the selective location that the musky seem to occupy on Seul? Why the east vs west sides?

Decisions, decisions. totally agree. baitmaker increased the gauge of the wire so it will be more durable. I love the bait when it runs plus its a prototype so I want to see it work.
