Posts: 50 | I have several older rods (6'-7') and I also recently broke a newer 8'6" rod. What can I do with these besides just throw them in the garbage? Blanks, handles and cork are all good. I know I could donate the older ones, but don't know exactly where. Can I recycle or take somewhere to build a new rod with old parts?

Posts: 1100 | I used a couple of broken rods to extend handles on new rods.

Location: Eastern Ontario | I keep a couple in the basement sawn off at first guide for spooling reels or reversing lines. Also save all carboly tips and sometimes a few guides

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | If they are not broken down too far send me an email. I know a group in Minnesota who takes as many broken rods as they can get. They have inner city kids refurbish them or harvest guides off of other rods too. Then they fix them all up and each kid gets a rod and then they take them out fishing. Much better than the alternative of dealing or using drugs! Many do not have father figures either. It really does help these kids out and gives them a different pathway in life to take vs a possible destructive pathway which will get them killed or prison... [email protected] Thanks James

Posts: 3157 | Depending on where they are broke and the action,,take the tip section or cut off 2-3 ft of it and put a cork handle on it and turn it into a ice fishing rod,,done it a bunch of times.

Posts: 50 | Thanks guys for the info. It doesn't sound like there is a great solution besides donating them. I think I'll definitely do that with the older ones. As far as the broken one. It basically broke right in the middle. Happened during casting a bulldawg. I wish I could say it was on a fish, but nope. It's a 8'6" Musky Mojo XH. I got this one in 2011 so it's no longer under warranty.

Posts: 27 Location: Badger State | I had a new rod broken a little past half-way up the rod - maybe 60% up the length (mistake on my part). I took it to a rod-building guy I know and he matched the butt end with the tip-end of a broken St Croix rod to make a "new" 2-piece rod. You need to find just the right spot to cut both so the ID of the tip section and the OD of the butt section overlap by a few inches to fit together. My broken rod started as an 8'6" 1-piece rod and ended up a 9'4" 2-piece rod. I wouldn't try it myself, but maybe a rod-builder would have the experience to do that fix. It's worth a look depending on the break and where it is in the rod.
