Hey guys,
I have a little problem.
Last week I was fishing with a quick strike rig using 12" suckers at Silver Lake WI. The problem I am having is that I missed eight fish that day. I sharpen my hooks everytime I go out, so I know that isn't the problem, but the percentage of missed fish is just way to high. Any suggestions?

one treble or two??

If using one treble, try placing it further back closer to the anal opening/tail. This happened to a buddy of mine last fall, he missed 3 fish in a row, moved the single treble back and got the 4th one.......it was a smaller fish.

The musky is grabbing it by the tail and not the midsection of the sucker.

I would use two smaller hooks on a quick strike rig one on top and one on the bottom. A 1/0 or 2/0 hook. I make my own which is easy to do.

Other problems you are having is some of those fish are probably small, 25-30". Some are bigger. Silver is notorious for fish just grabbing the sucker and just sitting there doing nothing. Many times you never know they have the sucker, they don't even strip line you just see an abnormal bend in your rod tip. Fish are often not in position to set the hook also. Suckers give you great action out there but the muskies are not always catchable with them.

I'm using a single hook in the upper lip and two treble offset on both sides of the sucker. A friend of mine told me the front hook not ripping out of the sucker is my problem. He said the lift off rig would be better for me. What do you think?

I was using two offset treble hooks with one hook in the upper lip of the sucker. Someone told me the front hook is my problem with it not ripping out of the suckers mouth. Should I use spider wire instead of mono to minimize stretching

that could be, you have 3 hook points (one in the lip, 2 in the sucker) that need to be ripped out.

A herbie or a lift-off will eliminate one hook point by replacing it with a rubber band.

try to put the other 2 treble hook points very lightly under the skin, this will help them rip loose better.
recommended hook sets on a herbie or liftoff is 3..one to break the rubber band, one to rip the hooks out of the sucker, one to put the hooks into the muskies mouth.

All 3 should be done very hard and not far apart from each other.

what rod are you using?? does it have enough oomph??

We saw two of the fish, and they were in the 36" to 38" range. I think if I remove the front hook and just use the rubber bands it might improve my hook sets.

your mainline is mono????

use superbraid absolutely if that is the case. 65# minimum, my preferance is 80# but thats me.

Tuff-LIne
Power Pro
Whiplash

these are the 3 biggies I know of, if Spiderwire goes heavy enough you could maybe use that.

Yes, it is a falcon medium heavy 6-1/2 feet. I also believe the mono was a problem with line stretch. Thanks for the tip with the 3 hook sets. I forget things after a long year waiting to fish muskies.
