Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Topwater, more pushes than hits!

Was wondering if other people are having similar experiences? Fished friday night and had four hits on topwater. One fish hit twice. Seems though that the fish are pushing the bait rather than hitting it. Tried a faster retrieve but slower speed got all the attention.

Maybe it's just me, but I get fish to do this ALOT. Really pisses me off too. I've watched large fish rush a bait, then stop a foot or 2 behind it, causing a swirl that pushes the bait away. Not to say that only large fish do that. If a big muskie wants a topwater, it will get it. The big girls usually hit topwaters with alot more accuracy and stealth. Slurp!! The sub-40in tend to bomb'em more, usually resulting in an airborne bait. But ya never know until ya get it hooked, been wrong before. Later

I've had this happen before but seems like this year the fish are doing it more, and not just with one type of top water bait. Your right about the larger fish slurping the bait. I love all top water hits but the ones that slurp are usually the bigger fish.

Sounds like they(the fish)are tell`in ya they don`t really want a top-water!I have seen the same thing and just switched baits and converted followers to biters! So far this tells me the fish just are not hitt`in surface baits, hope that will change, but the fish will let me know! Jeff

I know what you mean!! I tell my partner that not only are we ticked off at the jet skiers, but the fish think our lures are baby jet skiers and the fish are simply trying to throw then off. I really think they miss on purppose and are just playing..

One thing I have done in these cases is to twitch the bait right after the "PUSH" it seems tha the fish think they injured the bait and then hit it with a vengence

in general i think topwaters always have a lower hooking percentage- especially eratic moving lures like jackpots, probably cuz' they are just hard for the fish to see clearly- i saw one fish literally take 4 or 5 hits at a topraider(i know- unlikely story- but it really happened) and missed every time! it hit with a vengence- but just couldn't get the lure in its mouth-must have been a blind muskie...
