Second Annual Chapter Challenge
Teams of muskie anglers will compete for a traveling trophy. Cave Run Lake is
known as the “Muskie Capital of the South” and has the big fish to prove it. In
spring pre-spawn conditions, rattle baits like the Ratt L Trap and Rattlin Shad
consistently produce fish off shallow flats. Multiple fish days are possible. The
PMTT fishes this lake each year in April. The Daniel Boone National Forest
surrounds the lake where bald eagles fly along largely uninhabited shorelines.
*Open to Muskies Inc. members of Region 3 chapters and their out-of-Region 3 member guests, only

I hope you can make it.
This is probably the last Region 3 members-only event we will have. There's a motion brewing up top to give each region a thousand dollar grant annually to hold a challenge event that is to be open to all national members. Under those circumstances - if the motion passes - I'd like to see this event moved around to other locations within Reg. 3. m

Just a quick update: The US Forest Service manages the boat ramps the tourney will use on Cave Run. Region 3 has applied for a permit exemption to use their facilities for this event and last year we were granted a permit exemption. US offices have been closed during the shutdown and we will be contacting them this week to get our paperwork through so we can still hold the Chapter Challenge as scheduled. thanks for your interest, m.

Thirty four Muskies Inc. members competed on March 16 and 17 at Cave Run Lake, KY, in the second annual Region 3 Chapter Challenge. Contestants came from West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, New Jersey and Michigan to try for pre-spawn fish in the Muskie Capital of the South. Chapters 9, 41, 58, 52, and 63 were well-represented by the sixteen teams.

The cold front that brought the “bomb cyclone” to the mid-west also brought chilly temperatures and sunny blue skies to the tournament. The lake was about twenty feet above normal summer pool, with water temperatures in the low to mid-40's. Gregg Thomas provided updates on conditions at the Friday night meeting, and gave insight on what techniques are working.
First place trophy and plaques went to chapter 58's team of Jake and Bruce Welch, for their catches of 37.5, 37, & 31 inches. The trophy was presented by last year’s winning team president, Chapter 9's Jim Moore
The Big Fish award went to Ted Saunders for his 42 inch muskie. He got a plaque (sponsored by Patrick Custom Awards) and in addition to the cash pot, Musky Hunter Magazine put in $50.The second place team was Chapter 41's team of Ted Saunders and Bill Garris. Third place team of Bob Sisson, Lila Warren and Jim Evers brought in a thirty-three inch fish (her first reservoir muskie). Fourth place was Chapter 9 with a thrity incher. Another team lost a good fish boatside
Contestants all came away with door prizes sponsored by Tony Grant and Musky Hunter magazine, and West Virginia bait makers Bill and Sharon Crane, Lloyd and Erma Jones, and Bill Looney. Chapter 9 donated a Gander Mtn. rod. We thank these, our kind and generous sponsors, and the City of Morehead, Tony Grant for being our M.C., Mike Patrick for the awards, and Gregg Thomas for sharing his considerable expertise.
