Posts: 8807 | I figure it's a bonus as long as it's something I'd fish for otherwise. Snagged a carp in the tail once ripping a grandma. Had to be 30#. First thought: "Got 'em!" Second thought: "It's a BIG %^$&er!!" Third thought: "This things going to break my rod..." Fourth thought: "50"? 50#?!!" Then I saw the scales... Fifth thought: 'Ya gotta be kidding me!" I still can't believe some guys don't eat pike.... Edited by esoxaddict 3/12/2019 4:04 PM

Posts: 3497 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | No doubt when the target species is muskie we feel a little disappointment when it is something other than that, but heck.... a nice mid 20" northern is AWESOME to pickle!! HappyHooker...you should try that sometime...no worry about y bones as I believe they dissolve when you pickle the fish, and with crackers....oh man....my mouth is just watering thinking about this.... I still can't believe some guys don't eat pike.... In my case, I never learned to properly filet them, get the y bones out and still keep most of the meat. It bothers me to kill a fish and not make good use of it. This winter I have watched a couple of you tube videos and hope to keep a couple in the upcoming season. I think pike tastes better than walleye, just need to do a better job of preparing and minimizing the waste. Late last fall I spent about 4 hours casting then switched to trolling and in 2 hours boated three nice pike which I released. Was kicking myself that at my advanced age, I still didn't know how to properly filet them. Hope to change that.

Posts: 4269 Location: Ashland WI | As soon as the ice goes out of the bay, most of the guys around here are trolling for salmon/trout. I like pike as well, so I head for the shallow, warming sloughs and cast for them. Much more enjoyable (for me) than trolling, and I really like to eat them as well.

Posts: 3497 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | 14Ledo... when the ice goes off, you fish the hot pond at all for walleyes? I know it can get crowded there, but man that can be fun... I've done smallies one time up on the sloughs... Good time there as well.. Steve

Fifth thought: 'Ya gotta be kidding me!" .... I did this exact same thing with a Mag Double Dawg and a 3-foot carp... Greatest 40 seconds of my fishing life... until I saw scales... (now surpassed by the 49.5 musky I foul hooked in the middle of its back near the Dorsal Fin that peeled line off a locked down 500 PG Tranx like it was 404 Zebco) Edited by Mojo1269 3/13/2019 1:33 PM

I troll a bit for walleyes after the spawn and they have moved out to the 12-14 foot range.
