Message Subject: Fall Casting Techniques

I will be fishing in Northern WI (no trolling) in late Oct early November (post turnover). We plan on fishing primarily deep clear lakes with cisco forage. From what I have read, the fish at that time are generally deep, 20 ft and deeper. What artifical baits do you use then? What colors would you choose, and what are your techniques for working them? Thanks, Steve

Location: Illinois-Indiana | Steve, I don't fish northern Wisconsin but I fish a lot of open water. I use mag bulldwags, Slammer deep divers, the DDD and Bucher depth raiders. You can get the depth raiders in a count down model that will sink instead of float, just cast them out and count them down and start reeling and twitching. The fuzzy duzzit is another alternative if you have the patience. On a clear lake I would stick with colors that match the forage in the lake, you can't go wrong with anything in a perch color another favorite is red and white. One thing I do in the fall is slow down and realy work a bait, if I'm on a spot that I know will produce fish I have been known to work it all day NICE AND SLOW and pick it apart. If you drag suckers, then they are a MUST, one over the side and one out the back DEEP. Hopefully someone from up north will chime in and help out. Edited by Musky Fever 9/27/2003 7:29 AM

Posts: 389 Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | You need baits that will sink fast even in heavy winds and that have action at slow speeds. Other than fishing my Flowage option I fish deep all year from spring to ice up. Deep as in 20' of water with my lure - not the boat. Any number of baits are available that will get the job done including Shark countdowns, sinking depth Raiders, Sinking rapalas, Bulldawgs and other Soft plastics,Some of my personal favorites are waterlogged cedar glide baits dressed with a Gapen tail worked slowly but erractically on the bottom. Tap Tap Lift fall pull tap tap jerk and on and on. This action seems to have an edge over a generic retreive. On the type of lakes your going to fish there are Big Muskies DEEP 100% of the time at any time of the day and any season --Period.!! Other Guides fish higher in the water column with great success and as Chuck Altamonte ( One of the best up here) says "Id rather be 15' above them than 1' below them.I cant argue with His success; but Id rather be right at their level. Some days his way is going to prevail and on other days mine will. Its what makes the sport great. When you feel that lure stop at 25' down on a bright hot cloudless summer day- Well It doesnt get any better than that
