Posts: 246 Location: Grand Marais, MN | My brother and I have fished Lyman in Douglas county pretty regularly these last two years, and he has fished it 5 years before that. Anyway, we used yo rarely get skunked, usually two muskies per outing, never any pike. Now all we get is pike, and only landed one 36” Muskie this year. Anyone else been out there and noticing anything like this? It also seems like there’s an enormous amount of pressure out there that I’ve been told is much more than just a few years ago, obviously that doesn’t explain the pike but any thoughts would be interesting. I’ve seen 11 boat trailers out there a few times so I’m sure a few of you guys go out there

The DNR can't\won't get involved so not much can be done. The lakes need to be killed off and start over but i doubt that will happen. Fun action lakes 5-10 years ago but not anymore.

Posts: 246 Location: Grand Marais, MN | Ya my brother and I keep all the pike we catch there, with the exception of a 33” fish two days ago that flopped out of my hands before we could get him stringered. I think there still must be plenty of muskies in there we just can’t find em

If you like Lyman you should try Dumbell near Isabella MN. There are a couple lake residents that troll for them on their evening pontoon rides and keep them for dinner. That probably doesn't hurt as much as the pike population but certainly doesn't help.

My brother lives in duluth and we are canoe fisherman, so we are limited to smaller lakes and the smaller fish don't bother us at all, we've caught plenty of decent fish out there on these lakes. Just interesting to have landed a bunch of fish on Lyman last year, and only get one this year out there.

Look at Wisconsin's musky lake listing. It's a downloadable pdf right to your phone. Plenty of A2 class small lakes to peak your intersst.

Location: MN | I meant no disrespect to people who fish action lakes. I can see how my post read that way. I was just surprised there would be 11 boats on a tiny lake with mainly small fish. I guess that’s where everyone went who used to fish island and the river.

Posts: 246 Location: Grand Marais, MN | Actually surprises me how many people we see out there. We like be to throw smaller baits with medium heavy, shorter rods and have a blast but it’s funny to see 10 boat trailers, some of them very expensive boats, on a rather canoable lake.

It's so true. I live on Island and it's a shame what it was and what it has become. DNR does nothing. Such a waste of a great lake. 7-8 years ago the lake would have guys out there every evening even on weekdays. Now nothing...not even on perfect nice weekend evenings.

Posts: 444 Location: Duluth, MN | I would say it hasn't been the same since the 2012 floods. An unknown number of fish go through the dam to this day. Pictures of people catching fish in the pool below the dam each year prove this. The DNR knows there is low population and they doubled stocking one year but have not followed through with that. Back to same level of stocking. 1,600 in 2017, 566 in 2016, 1600 in 2015. For an 8000 acre lake that doesn't seem like enough to me. And they are just fingerlings so i assume the survival rate is very low. Would like to see them come up with a plan to stock yearlings but i suppose the money for that would have to come from somewhere and is just not available. And like most lakes that boomed in the early 2000's there is just a natural leveling off.
