Posts: 68 | It is that time of year. This past weekend in the Hayward area I had multiple lakes with 80 Degree surface temp. These are pretty clear lakes and I even had 78 on a Gin Lake. Then next 8-10 days show the warm weather is going to continue and get even hotter. What is everyone's thoughts on this? My belief is a guy should hold off on targeting muskies until the water drops back to a safe range or head way north. I don't feel that there is such a thing as a safe way to fight and handle fish in these temps.

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | Get a grip, it's not even July yet and you're talking surface temp! Dive down 5' and the temp changes significantly. Cut the self righteous crap. People were starting to bring this up during the Northern WI opener this year after ice went out just a few weeks prior. If you want to stop fishing for them good for you but don't preach your nonsense to me. By the way, how is 78 okay but when temps hit the magical 80 fishing shall cease? Do you think leagues and scheduled tournaments should cancel or postpone? SMH. Edited by MartinTD 6/25/2018 8:31 AM

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | Not the best timing for this post I see the next 3 days in the northland are upper 70’s, overnight lows in the 50s and low 60s. Probably use some common sense measures this weekend if out but....to tell people to cancel trips? Pretty silly to be playing that card in this scenario

Location: Contrarian Island | surface temp means nothing in mid june in Wi/MN etc... it's when the entire water column hits 80 to 20 feet down is when guys should hang up the musky rods. until then, carry on.

you could water release them, take quick picture of the giant only.there is no temp difference at just 5' and there is no real difference between top to surface in a riverine systeme. sorry to break your bubble but the temperature is the same for almost 200' have a look at some graph about thermocline if you want more info

X2 I had 77-78 Memorial day Weekend. Stick you hand down 12 inches and it was icy.

Posts: 8782 | Seen this a few times at this time of year. Surface temps close to 80, oh no! Then you catch a fish or two and discover that they are actually cold to the touch compared to the water you're rinsing your hands in. Or you could just jump in the lake and wonder why your feet are so cold...

It's early, in late July and august the water is warmer through the comumn. I notice on lsc fish in august and sept revive very slowly even though the water temp may only be 75. Last weekend we seen 74 and the fish shot off like a rocket after release. Edited by ToddM 6/25/2018 11:54 AM

Posts: 68 | Sorry to ruffle your feathers. I never said 78 was ok. And yes, I do feel that if it is dangerous to the fish than league and tournaments should be halted. It was a simple question, I've heard a lot of opinions both ways. I have also heard a lot of reports of floating fish, not so much last year, but the year before I heard of a bunch in our area. Like you said, do what you want. There is nothing wrong with a little bit of caution though. Anyways sorry for making you mad, have a nice day!

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | 2012 was a hot year! Recent years not so much. All good cdubs; maybe my question should have been did you fish when you saw those temps or did you pack it up and move on to the next lake? Fish on the deep clear lakes like you mentioned are holding in deeper areas anyways where the temps throughout the entire water column are much cooler. Take Big Round from that area as an example, Hinton Bay might be 78 but the basin area is nowhere near that. Sorry just laughable to me that this was already brought up. In general the crowd here is well aware of the concerns with delayed mortality associated with high water temps.

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | I encourage you to take a look at the temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles of the lakes you fish on the WiDnr website. There is more to the equation than simply surface temp.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | Was scuba diving this week and in the Townsend area surface temps were 79 to 83 and water down to 12 foot was pretty much the same. Down to 19 upper 60s at 20 is when it got cold.

Posts: 612 | The "Fish Hawk" vertical temperature gauge works well. Let it down slow and it provides temp incrementatly every 5' down. The trouble is that for ~ $150 you can't replace the batteries. I used one when I used to fish for lake trout.
