What has your experience been with shipping rods? I am looking for numbers on successful rod shipping experiences versus failed rod shipping experiences. Looking for both numbers from people who ship rods themselves and also the customers who bought the rods. I would consider a broken guide/insert as a negative overall experience. I have never shipped a rod personally but I am considering it based on the amount of risk involved. I have had 5 rods shipped to me with one bad experience where one of the guides was damaged. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Posts: 427 | Only problem I had was with Amazon. Worst packaging I ever saw IMO for shipping a rod. Never had issues with anyone though. All rods got to me in one piece. Probably 10-15 rods over the years from different sources.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I've shipped probably 2 or 3 musky rods and received 4 or 5. No damage or issues ever. I've shipped out probably a dozen ice rods and never had one break. If you can ship in the SpeeDee zone it's by far the cheapest option

I have received 3 from retailers, all arrived just fine. I did save the container from the last one, a 9' telescoping rod from TI, just in case I ever needed to ship.

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | Taken from another forum I frequent where they often deal with expensive and collectable rods... Use the USPS...Following advice from a well-known rod-maker I send the triangular boxes USPS Registered Insured. It adds no expense, but this service requires hand-carry of the box through much of the USPS system, thus reducing the possibility of machine-transport damage. And.... Registered insured is the way to go, every soul that touches the parcel must sign for it. Dealers that ship 6 figure collectable firearms tend to use it for that very reason. If you use Registered, you have to put plain brown tape on all openings so it can be stamped to make certain it isn't tampered with. The only downside I've found from Registered is that it's slower than priority..................... I've shipped "registered" and it's been excellent.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | I have shipped over 50,000 rods... Almost all of our Tackle Ind and Vexan rods are shipped in heavy tubes. USPS breaks 1 out of 4 rods - hard to get insurance claims granted UPS breaks 1 out of 10 rods - hard to get insurance claims granted FedEx breaks 1 out of 50 or so rods - Good insurance SpeeDees breaks 1 out of 500 or so rods - Good insurance Enjoy... Posts: 866 Location: NE Ohio | have rec'd over 20 from 7' to 9'. have only gotten one delivered broken. from UPS. tube showed up broken in the middle and re-taped at a 90 degree angle! i said to the driver what good is this? he said it was handed to him for delivery like that, and drove off. it was an elk river rod, they are top notch customer service. i sent them pic's from my phone and marc had a new one coming the same day. he said thats why they carry the insurance with UPS and its not the first one they had delivered broken. st. croix also uses UPS on the rods i've got from them.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have never shipped a rod before so this is very helpful. I mail everything through USPS but it looks like it might be a little risky to ship a rod through them based on James's experience.

Posts: 612 | Had at least 8 rods delivered over the years. Never had damages. However I probably came very close 2ce. The cardboard tube that contained these 2 rods was broken - cracked severely. To tell you the truth its a miracle the rods were undamaged.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | USPS has gotten better with insurance. TAKE PICTURES before you ship and also write on the tube: DO NOT MACHINE SORT. That has helped a lot with the USPS in the last year. Baby Mallard - 4/8/2018 1:52 PM Thanks for the replies everyone. I have never shipped a rod before so this is very helpful. Posts: 1348 Location: Pewaukee, WI | I must have either shipped or received a dozen rods over the years using Spee Dee Service and have never had a rod lost or damaged in anyway. I use them for other items as well when shipping to or receiving goods within the Spee Dee zone. If you haven't tried them you should.
