I am setting up a combo for light musky fishing. I wont be throwing anything heavier than a couple oz likely. Small bucktails, topwater and crankbaits. I have a 7'10"St Croix flippin stick and was thinking either a Calcutta 200 w/65lb braid or would i be better with a 400? I will likely also troll some and may add an 8' rod for that. I want to stick with Shimano
Am i on the right track?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Tranx 300 with 65lb will be good for that rod.

I musky fish with my calcutta 200 all the time on a flippin stick. It will handle what you are looking to do. Mine is spooled with 50lb braid but 65 will work.

That's the exact setup I use for "frog" fishing bass. (7'10" Mojo Bass Flippin with the Calcutta 201).

I also troll crankbaits, like shad raps and "trolls to" cranks and spinnerbaits like Candy Spins. I cast a lot of shadow raps with it and will occasionally throw the 4" phantom, too. I really like the versatility of the rod and wouldn't hesitate to throw 6" slammers, babygirls, or cisco kid toppers with it.

I used a stcroix mojo bass "swimbait rod 1-4oz" and a abugarcia revo inshore with 65# worked great. 50# would be better i think as long as your not rite up in some cover

I use a 7' 6" Fenwick flippin rod with a Curado 300 spooled with 65# braid. Works great on all these smaller baits.

I use a Quantum EXO 200SPT on a Veritas 7'9" Rod with 30lb Power Pro slick for light stuff (8s, spinnerbaits, small cranks and rubbers). Feels like I'm fishing for bass with it. Casts a mile and I can throw it all day long.

Man that is light but I'll bet also tons of fun! You go thru your swivel a couple of times on your knots for a bit of peace of mind? I can see me doing that...

That's going really lightweight. The line should hold okay but I'd be worried about good hook-sets. Bet it's a ball though...

If keeping the weight down is important, check out the new Johnny Morris size #30 reel from BPS. Musky sized and only 8.3ozs!

I bought a Tranx 400 and put it on a St.Croix LT 'long ranger' last year and love it!
