Location: Grayling, Michigan | Considering buying a new to me rig. 2005 Lund 17’ with 60hp Evinrude etec. Wondering the thoughts of those with experience with the etecs. Maintenance seems to be a concern with some on frequency and cost. Anyone care to add their thoughts on this or any other positives or negatives. Always have had merc 2 strokes and did routine maintenance myself.

Location: Eastern Ontario | Son in law has a 2004 75 HP he's had no issues most around here have the oil set at 50 to 1 but buy the 100 to 1 oil. The oil is pricey.
Where did you get the merc 3 stroke they're kinda rare

Location: MN | I looked into them went a different route. What advantages do you feel they offer over other options. I know a few guys who run them seams mixed some love them others lament having to buy oil and have had some maintenance items. |

Looks like they self winterize and a lot of folks claim they are bomb proof . I guess my hang up is wondering how high maintenance they will be. What was your reason for going another route? |

Location: Eastern Ontario | Check out the etech owners form. I do know that some models at one point were having computer issues the company was replacing the part at half price if you screamed loud enough. I always wonder half of what price.

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | I would get a service report from a dealer for the motor. The e-tec computers log every error and that could be helpful to understand what history the motor has.
I just bought a new 50 hp etec in January and I can say so far, that i am impressed. I talked with my local dealer about the issues that they see and he recommended the etec over the other brands they carried. I get 37.8 mph by myself and better mileage than my 25 2 stroke carb motor. I am getting over 13 mph cruising at 29-30mph.
There was a software recall on the 60 hp motors, so I would make sure that was up to date as well. If the motor is set to XD-100, you do have to run that oil only. Plugs for "normal maintenance" have to be indexed, so typically guys buy 4 plugs for an I-2 to make sure they can index them properly. Other than that, the maintenance is virtually the same as any other motor (filters, lower unit oil, greasing, check hardware, etc).

I too have just switched to the e-tec line and am very excited about it. Maintenance cost might be high when the time comes to replace plugs, but that only happens every 300 hours...which for many of us unless trolling will be at least 3 years. My rig has 98 hours on the motor so its not due for quite some time yet. The fuel filter is a simple spin-on water separating filter (at least for the larger motors) but again, that falls under the 300 hour maintenance schedule.
Other than swapping out gear oil at the end of the year, taking the 2 minutes to let the engine winterize itself, and keeping the oil reservoir filled with oil, there's really nothing more...
maintenance-wise, I don't see how there is any more than a normal 2 stroke engine...and I've run 2 stroke all my life.
Benefits: Lighter, quicker response, low end torque and trolling wise, it'll beat any 4 stroke..

Location: WI | Been running a 90hp Etec for 10 trouble free years. Did the 3 year check up, changed the impeller once since then, and lower unit lube annually. Might change the plugs this year. |

| I had 2012 60hp etec on an alumacraft tiller. I had to have the starter replaced, under warranty, after the first year. The starter didn't fail, it just made a grinding noise when I started the engine. Otherwise it was a great motor for trolling and regular running. I always ran XD100. |
