Looking for some help with my boat trailer...

When doing a look see at the suspension/axle of my trailer, I noticed a rusty spot on the bottom side of the square axle. When I took a closer look, I noticed a hole as well. I scraped off the rust with a wire brush. I guess it's possible the hole is a drain hole intentionally drilled there. But I'm not certain...to be honest I've never looked at the bottom side of the axle before.

All in all the axle seems sturdy...mostly surface rust. Does this spot look like it would compromise the integrity of the axle, or is it something that I can wait on to replace? Trailer was made circa 1991 and it has original the axle and leaf springs.

new axle manufacturers have you drill a drain hole in the bottom middle to allow water to drain. Your axle is fine.

Check the installation instructions on Eastern Marine Superstore website. I have installed new axles on both of my boat trailers and this is one of the first things they have you do (drain hole).

That's that I figured as far as the drain hole. But what about the corrosion?

Lol, if you think that's corroded I'd hate to think what you'd say about my trailer!

You're fine.

Hiya,

What your axle is showing is surface rust.... very superficial and won't be an issue for many many years. You've got easily another 10 years or more given the axle stays straight...

If anything, the axle will rust more from the inside out as the inside is not protected. I think your axle has a long way to go before you'd see that kind of oxidation taking place
