my last day in Canada I noticed my Shimano 500HG having a grinding feel to it while reeling in. It has been smooth as silk until the last day of the trip. I have had it since they first came out in 2012 and have never had it serviced. I only use it for a couple weeks per year and I keep it as clean as possible. I spray it daily when we are fishing with Real Magic. I'm assuming I need to get it professionally lubed up/oiled. Do any of you have experience with what I am talking about and do you think it will get back to being as smooth as silk? Where do I take it? Live in Lockport ILLinois. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Mark

I took mine guerilla fishing a few times and it got gritty. So when I got some time I popped the side, took out the spool, handle nut, handle alignment bracket and screw, handle, star drag tensioner (be careful there because there is a captured washer and spring behind the star), and spool tension knob off, loosened the housing screws, and cracked the housing just enough to fit the WD-40 straw and hosed her down inside and out. I wiped down some of the exterior parts and reassembled. Once reassembled it was as good as new. I thought to myself as long as I don't lose any of the parts then I could have sent it in for a professional reassemble in the worse case scenario. But if you are diligent in not losing stuff and are reasonably mechanically inclined its relatively easy to do and will most likely work for you.

Pikemaster can do it. He lives in Seneca or Morris, which is close.

I would go with a grease on the gears rather than the wd40 bath... I personally use reel butter by Ardent. When I tear mine down to clean and lube I grease the main drive gear, pinion gear and worm shaft gear. I apply oil to the bearings as well. A drop is enough per bearing sometimes less.

Yamalube or Lucas marine grease would be much better than WD-40.

I would consider as wd40 cleaner and degreaser not lubricant.

What's the problem with WD-40 ?? It did a heck of a job blowing the grit out. I'm aware its not a long term fix but its not like it will melt the gears lol.

The problem is WD-40 also blows out all of the "good" lube.

Use the WD 40 to clean, then follow up with the grease of your choice..
