Going up in early september for the 1st time, just wondered if i will have to deal with a major bloom then, and if so, should i avoid it and look for clearer water?

ive researched this some, seems like people go both ways, ive never liked the stuff myself, but dont have enough experience in it to know if it hurts the fishing or not.

thanks!

They still have to eat...messy, but still productive there at that time. Let the wind help you out when you can...

so fish it Larry? or if i can find clearer water, go there?

i just wondered if it lowers the oxygen in the water, so fish may not be in normal spots if there's a bloom present..

Yes, you can certainly get hit with it that week. And yes, I think it certainly can hurt at times. Especially on a lake where figure 8 mechanics are becoming more important to catch fish with added pressure....hard to master one if you can't see them.

Worst trip I ever had there was a late August baker with little wind and bloom so thick it felt like it was slowing down the boat....

No, not that one, but the conditions were excessive. Most weeks there will be at least a few days to blow it around and move it. I caught one last year in this so it's always possible...

I usually do a late Aug trip, and have also been up there in Sept/early Oct. Yes, the bloom will probably always be at its worst in late summer/early fall. The extent of the bloom is variable, year-to-year, but it is something that you'll likely have to deal with during that timeframe.

We do try to avoid it when possible, but we've also found that our best spots will remain productive even when green. Probably the biggest problem, as Brian points out, is that you can't see follows very easily.

We've usually been fortunate in that we haven't had many trips where its been flat calm for extended periods of time. It can get really nasty, like as shown in Brian's picture, if you get a day or two without any wind. But with any wind, the stuff moves around a lot, and spots sometimes clear up rather quickly. On the other hand, the wind will push the stuff into previously clean spots as well, so it can be a bit of a shell game at times.

Overall, I'd say for sure look for the cleaner water, but if you have some really good spots, don't avoid fishing them just because they are green.

Easy solution, Fish the big narrows region of the NW Angle. Always current in there. Can be night and day difference.

Dave,

I'll be sure to touch base with you when I'm back. Head up a week from Sunday for a week. Last year we had it bad... there was a steady ditch wind all week and we were in the north end of things... thick enough in spots you could feel the boat lift out of the water more on plane. Weird feeling.

We struggled in it as we didn't try and run away from it. Enough wind had everything pea green down a few feet... the fish just did not want to show or eat either..

This yes we are going to make longer runs and find cleaner water. Still will try out luck on known spots, but if nothing is there, I'm not sticking around in it long... smelly nasty stuff....

Praying it is nowhere near as bad as last year.

Steve

In early September I would play the wind and avoid the bloom. Some days can be frustrating when you have located a lot of big fish and the next day the soup moves in but despite a little extra effort cleaner water is always out there to find and the fishing that time of year can be really good. Good luck!

I was up last week and there was more algae in the 4th week of July than I ever remember seeing. I am headed back next week and fingers crossed that it didn't get a whole lot worse. I can handle it. But taking the girlfriend and kids and don't want them to have to deal with the soup.

You will more than likely have to deal with the bloom. Last year there was still bloom in that part of the lake the 2nd week of October. You will be able to find clean water to fish. Lake week the bloom was really bad in areas and 2 miles away it was clean.

My buddy came home today and said the algae this past week was a non factor. Him and I had more algae the last week of July than he did this past week. I am headed up tomorrow for a week and temps won't get above 80 all week.

Here's the hoping the algae holds off!

I just got home today from another week. Algae was a non factor until Friday. Friday was brutal. You could find clean areas, but when the wind quit blowing if you weren't anywhere near current, it was sitting on top. There was a spot it looked like green shaving cream it was so thick.

The next day on Saturday was better. I think it's probably day by day right now up there.

I am up on LOTW right and can tell you this piece of advice is horrible. The worst bloom anywhere in the Angle right now is in the Big Narrows area.

Thats a first..... For the last 10 years I've been going up there and by far the BN has the best viability.

Last week in the lower sections down to the Windego's (and past) it was very green, then we had strong south winds on Sunday and blew it all north. Bishop bay was soup on Saturday. It's a big bloom this year and Big Narrows can and will collect the bloom.
