Posts: 246 Location: Jamestown, Pa. | My Lake is 28 feet at the deepest. What's the best way to troll around weed beds and corresponding deep water ( up to 15 feet) ? How about casting and going from weedbed to deep or visa versa? Best trolling speed to start with under these hot conditions? Thanks guys, I am still learning stuff in this lake>

Posts: 688 Location: Northern IL | Troll the weed line using you depth sounder, markers, and sites,,, the weeds will all grow to the relative same depth in your lake. (natural lake). Trolling properly will teach you all you need to know about your body of water. Most waters,, give or take,,(natural lakes) 3500 +/- acres can be worked out within about 4 days or less. You then can spend your time in the areas with the best chance to catch a fish. If your looking for a general speed in order to land a fish before learning the bottom make up,,, that would be putting the cart before the horse. All depths and speeds must be checked. However this time of year think deep, 15',,, ha,, that's not deep,,, and think fast,, 6mph+. Their are no absolutes, check it all!

Posts: 246 Location: Jamestown, Pa. | Thanks Jerryb, our lake is a manmade. "Pymatuning Lake" was made for flood control. Pretty flat area. The next flood control lake of the same river ( Shenango Lake) is much deeper ( made in a hilly area) but unlimited horse power and takes much pwc and speed boat trffic. The "Tuning" is limited to 9.9 at the present time ( battle going on to raise the HP limit) We do have great walleye and musky fishing in this lake. I would just like to better understand the trolling part as I don't have much luck at that. I have caught most of my fish casting. Thanks again for the info.

Posts: 688 Location: Northern IL | Stan, Glad to help however, the hardest part about catching a fish is knowing what to look for,,, then we can spend our time in those areas in which we have the best chance to catch a fish, learning to troll properly will teach us this. Trolling is the teacher! I have never been to your particular lake but it really dose not matter,, a natural lake or a reservoir, hp limit, or a lot of fishing pressure or a little,, a fish is a fish, is a fish, even the muskie can NEVER,, be held on any kind of pedestal no matter what lake shes swims in, IE. they all react the same to there surroundings, "weather and water conditions at the time". Your question had to do with trolling weed lines and that is cake!! You must practice trolling. One great thing is a structure situation never changes. Use markers! A weed line may fluctuate in depth a bit from year to year due to water color, and also throughout a season but the bulk of the fish will always use the same areas as long as a path remains for them to follow.
