Location: Central Wisconsin | I'm looking at purchasing a Ranger 681 vs (2000-2002) in the near future, and most I see don't have the front or rear casting platform. I've considered Just Encase boxes, but I'm not sure I want to spend the additional money. I would also consider building my own, but would like to know if there are "factory" extensions available, and how much they typically cost. Does anyone have any idea?

Location: Duluth, MN | I just had one made for my 1999 620vs. Call Ranger and have your VIN number ready. They will make you one from scratch so it takes 4-6 weeks. They did not have the original color of my carpet available anymore so i got mine uncarpeted and just carpeted it myself. I didn't get an exact match but it's good enough for me. Cost was $365 for the rear deck and $66 shipping. The box it comes in is HUGE...they use FEDEX Freight. It comes with the extension pole and adaptors to install a butt seat but i didn't use the ones they sent. I bought my own and installed it offset from the middle as that would have been too far away from the side of the boat. It also comes with hardware to hold it in place on the underside. Lots of storage underneath now.
Not familiar with your models layout but this gives you a rough idea what to expect.

Contact a dealer and have your hull number ready - they'll match it according to your color and yr model. I heard price may vary.
Otherwise this is a very doable DIY project. I haven't done anything with mine yet however........

Dave, your going to love that boat! I had a '97 681VS specked out custom as my 1st Ranger. Loved it.
I did order it with both a front deck and the rear wider platform and sorry but I can't recall the $$ involved. But I would've not been long w/o both had I not purchased both up front!
What you WILL find though is the front deck ext. doesn't have a built-in water seal/trough so every #*^@ time it rains everything that's stored inside will get wet Still, it's worth it.

I've seen some for sale with a 115hp four stroke, what kind of performance can be expected from one set up like that? I don't need to go 60+ mph, I'd rather have the fuel economy and lose some speed, but I don't want a "dog" either.

With the 4, expect a good consistent ride anywhere in the 30's. For reference I have a 115 2-stroke and top end with it is 42-45mph. I'd expect similar results with the 4. Prop style will make a difference I've learned. |

I know the combination of the extra weight of a four stroke and a reduction in hp reduce top end, but I would've thought them to be a little closer in performance. I've read the 135hp Merc was closer to mid 140's for an actual hp rating, and those motors fly on that hull. But, I think I'd be content to go slower and have better fuel economy.

| Mine measures 40-1/2" X 16-1/2" overall. (a bit more with the carpeting, I'd account for the thickness of the carpeting...) There's a lip on the front just like what the compartment latches have. Can't tell because it's carpeted but I'd guess it's 3/4" marine grade plywood. Might only be 1/2", as it does flex some when you stand on it. Attached on both sides and in back with small L brackets, 2 screws each. It's also got a hole in it for a seat post which I can measure for you if you'd like. Pretty sure mine came from Ranger, but it looks really easy to build. Need a pic?
