Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I am looking to get a hand held GPS in the very near future. Which ones are the best? Do I need to spend $300-$400 to get a good one, or can I get a good one for $150-200? Thanks in advance, Mike Hulbert

Posts: 7123 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Not gonna upgrade Azrael to an X-15 with GPS? After that you can load a couple downriggers on, a 9.9 kicker, pinpoint system, full livewell....then she'll probably sink. I think when you part with her Mike (beginning of next year when you get your PATRIOT), we should load her with old wooden muskie lures and give her a Viking Funeral.

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Sorry AJ, but I probably won't be doing many upgrades to the old girl. Viking funeral? Sorry dude, don't understand? But I must say that a 9.9 kicker and downriggers would be a great addition. Hulbert

Posts: 177 Location: Germantown & Land O Lakes WI | This question all hinges on how large of a screen you're looking at using. There's no doubt that you should go with a Garmin...none. They lead the way in GPS technology. You can pick up an Etrex Ledgend (the little blue one) for about $200.00. 8mb of memory, WAAS capable, waterproof, mapping features. The problem with the Etrex is it's screen size. Its very small at about 2.5" x 1.5" (est). For 300.00 you can move up to the Map76. Larger unit with a larger screen size (about 2.5" x3.5". The 76 was made as a marine GPS with Man Over Board features, tidal info and it floats. It has 8 mb of memory and has base maps of the Americas like the Legend. it is also WAAS capable. I have the Map 176 (and the Map 76, the Rino 120 and the 162Map) and I cannot tell you how awsome this unit is. It's huge with a screen size of almost 4"x4". The 320 x 240 10 level grey scale resolution really allows for high detail. Another great Marine GPS with a hefty price tag of $500.00, but it's both handheld and mountable.

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | Mike, I have the Garmin e-map and love it. It is not the current seller so you can get a deal on them. I bought mine on eBay about 2 yrs ago and have had no problems with it. I even go to garmins website and download the latest versions right to the unit. What ever you go with get a 12 volt power cord for sure. These electronic wonder gizmos are battery eaters.

Posts: 177 Location: Germantown & Land O Lakes WI | Mike.........NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Magellan! They do not offer FHS map software yet and basically followed Garmin's Etrex series. Their mapping software, in my opinion, is not as detailed and their GPS units are alot more difficult to operate. If I had a nickel for every guy who said....."I should have just went with the Garmin", I could have retired by now.

Posts: 177 Location: Germantown & Land O Lakes WI | Mike, we have them at Gander for 200.00 brand new. I like to sell electronics on EBAY, but I sure dont want to buy them on there...kinda risky. At least with a retailer like Gander, you get a month to return it....try that on Ebay. If you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected] OOH, DO NOT BUY THAT IFINDER.....it's not waterproof! To keep water off of it, they give you a plastic baggy!
