Im getting a setup together just for fishing with suckers in the fall. What type of line is everyone using? Braid? Mono?

I just stick with 80-100lb braid

Some of the guys that do it a lot will tell you 130+, which would be great, but I think 100lb masterbraid is sufficient. Masterbraid is super thick and pretty much unbreakable. I would not use 80. I hardly trust 80 on my casting rods.

You guys are breaking 80-100 pound braid on the hookset when using suckers? Seems more likely to have the rod break than the line when setting the hook especially with a glass composite rod that should absorb a lot of the initial shock

If your using big giant 4x hooks you need a knocking the hat off your head hookset. I don't and have never had a problem using 80lb. I could see where 80lb would break in the above scenario.

friends of mine are catching 50 pound plus flathead on 50 pound line without trouble at all, they must fight at least twice harder than musky.if you break 80 lbs line you are doing something wrong,or your rod action is way too fast for sucker

Cat fish are a diferent hook set scenario. The extra hard hook set is the worry with muskies.

When I set the hook with a sucker, I try to have a couple inches of slack in the line just before I set it. I feel it helps break the sucker away from your harness. But that increases stress on the line. 80 is great for casting medium baits, but will break with bigger stuff and suckers.
