how do you guys work a manta? i got to use mine for the first time yesterday. I throw it out, let it sink to about 3-5 feet, and start working it slow for the first 4 or 5 taps. then start working it faster, but it seems to always come up to the surface after working it fast for a little bit. how can i keep it down? i had a mid to upper forties fish follow it to the boat and just turn away.

It is almost impossible to get the Manta's to run deeper.

I have found out that a few quick taps with one long hard snap sending it way out there is the best method for me. Also I have a lot better luck on the Hang 10 than the regular Manta. The Hand 10 requires a short stiff rod to use correctly though. The regular Manta can be worked by the reel during the short walk the dog, but then give your rod a quick snap down to the the Manta to shoot out, let it pause for about 4 seconds before you start up again.

Are you guys using the Super Shallow Mantas? Or the Surface Skimmers (only a few were sold by Rollies (I think). The regular Mantas should give you no trouble getting down. They can go clear to the bottom. Some people thought regular Mantas run too deep--hence the shallow models. Early ones were marked only on the packages. New ones are marked as to type on the tail. Point the rod at the lure, short twitches (snaps?) down. If you time it right they will walk, glide, etc. Easy. Regular Mantas can be worked with "up" snaps at times to make 'em stay a bit shallow. Super Shallows only run a foot or two deep, Skimmers just break the film. Super Shallows especially good for rocks & high weeds. Mix your retrieve for best results. Tap, tap, TAP, hesitate. Keep rod pointed AT the lure or slightly down. If fish follow to the boat, turn away--maybe they have been caught recently or they don't like your looks or your boat. Good reason for a new boat! And yes, they do hook fish, a lot of fish.

I have no problem with the Manta. If worked fast it will rise a bit, but I will let it sit longer after the cast to alow the proper rise during retrieve.
I have heard and agree you will get a LOT of follows with the Manta, but with the Hang Ten the fish hammer it!

It may need tuned, bend the front tie upward. This will also give it some belly roll. . If that doesn't work, send it to me.

you can buy a weight set and drill a hole the size of the threads and then glue them in there and then this little weight twists inside it .. works great.. i did it to mine. i wasn't using a weight at the time but a couple weeks ago up in wisconsin caught a 25" in muskie on it and prob 36" on that got off after it jumped in the air like a second it got hooked. i think you can get the weights in r&H

I use a walk the dog method on my retrieve, with an occasional long pull. While in Canada this past June I had two nice skies ( at least both 40's ) follow the manta back to the boat. One on each side of the bait. It was just the neatest thing, to bad I couldn't have had a real double.
