While up north (WI) this past weekend fishing the Alliance Tournament, and not to mention roasting like a Butterball Turkey on the Weber grill we took a break for lunch at a local watering hole. I was speaking with one of the residents there and the phrase "Summer turnover" caught my ears. Being the muskie crazed angler I am, I politely butted in their conversation and asked exactly what they were talking about. They explained, in their opinion, that the lakes actually experience a summer turnover. Now, the funny thing about this is, while I was with my partner I noticed the same smegma on the surface that I do in the fall during what I consider the true lake turnover effect.

Any thoughts on this subject are welcomed. Any bioligists out there that can help define what is taking place on the northwoods lakes?

The high water temps and low winds ( high light penetration) we have had are ideal for growing algae, which is what you are seeing. There isn't a 'summer turnover' per se, just a surface temp warm-up. 'Turn over' is a term that describes a process where the surface temps equalize with the mid and lower water column, with cooler water on top causing the lower, warmer water in the column to rise, and 'turn the lake over'.

..turn the lake over..

Which happens when? The days and nights have to cool off enough to cool the surface temp to that of deeper depths? How does this effect Musky fishing? Does it bring back up the deeper fish to shallower water?
