I got a 7ft St Croix Triumph with an Abu Record On it with 80lb Power Pro loaded onto it...bought it this Fall for Live Bait have used Rod and Reel one time to hang bait for few hours has never seen a fish on it and is Like New If that would interest you should be perfect size for him

My boys been using a 8' mh premier for last couple years. He's 10 now. With a 300 curado. He had the 7' triumph but it's was awkward for him to do decent figure 8s. Also he will be able to grow into the rod. I also put a jig ripper grip on it. Very comfortable for him. I used my dremal to cut grip down a bit to fit his hand.
A Toro s 50, okuma 364, curado are small on light weight, you can find them on ebay once in awhile cheap.
