| Recently, I was paging through the Rollie and Helen's catalog and observed an old school lure still for sale that brought back some musky trip memories. It was the summer of 1984. A college buddy and me took a trip up to the Chippewa Flowage in between semesters. I remember driving up listening to cassette tapes (do they still make them anymore?)of the Cars and Van Halen. We were staying at Clement's resort which was on the east side of the Flowage, in Moore's bay I believe. My buddy an I decided to hire a guide at the beginning of our stay because we were both determined to catch some muskies on this trip. We met our guide on Monday morning and off we went. On our first stop, the guide had me throw a funny looking lure that looked like a small rodent swimming across the surface. I thought to myself, he wants me to use that? As we were fishing, the guide noticed that I was always trying to cast to objects that I observed above the water. He made the comment that I remember to this day. "It's more important what you don't see when your on the water than what you do see." I've never forgotten that comment! Talk about true words of wisdom. Anyway, to make this long story short, it seemed that the guide had us fish a particular location which seemed to be in the middle of no where, on three different occasions. Years later, I found out that the spot turned out to be Pete's bar, one of the most famous locations on the Flowage. My buddy and I did not catch a fish on the outing but the guide lost a nice fish at the boat. The lure I was using was a Tallywacker and our guide for the day was none other than Wayne Gutsch the designer. Has it really been 33 years already? And I guess it goes to show, after 33 years plus, good baits that produced back then can still produce today. Kdawg |
