Why is 80# so popular? Is it the weight of the lures that requires such heavy line? 30# power pro on a large spinning reel catches tarpon without trouble.

Because abrasion from structure weakens line and backlashing heavy lures would snap 30lb like sewing thread. Muskie rods/reels/line isnt designed to fight fish, it's designed to take the abuse of casting half pound lures 2-3 thousand times per day

I always tell people, "it's not for the fish, its for the $50 lure hanging off the end.". Lol the gentleman above me said it best, this is an abusive style of fishing... nuff said!
