Location: Eastern Ontario | Anybody ever had any luck enlarging a hole with a hole saw when you don't have a solid center for a drill bit to center the saw? The hole my depthfinder wires com through is about 1 inch in diameter and I'm thinking I need about 2 with some way to trim it. I have to get 3 power cables, 3 network cables and at least 1 transducer cable to the top of my console. Had to remove 16 screws to get panel off underside of console WHY WOULDN'T THEY JUST USE A PIANO HINGE AND A COUPLE OF LATCHES. I'll have to see if I can.

Posts: 866 Location: NE Ohio | i got all of my bird stuff thru a 3/4" hole. remember you only have to get the biggest plug thru then the rest to pass by with wires in hole. i used a 1/2" drill hole, coarse rat tail file, and fine sand paper to finish. then a cover on top.

Location: Eastern Ontario | Power cables can thread from the top but transducer and network cables have to come up from the bottom and once 2 of any cable is in place the connectors won't pass through. I was in a boat somewhere where there was a large hole with a plastic insert with a bunch of pie shaped cuts that allowed the wires to pass through. Wish i knew where to find one of those animals. I'm mounting 3 units so I will have a large bundle of wires. Edited by horsehunter 4/29/2017 8:04 PM

Location: Ontario | Just cut same hole as your existing with hole saw using scrap piece of wood, swap your hole saw to the new size you like, and use that scrap piece as your guide in the old hole. Did this many times , always with success Edited by lifeisfun 4/29/2017 8:17 PM

Location: Eastern Ontario | Thanks I will try that on some scrap now to find a way to trim the hole to see what size to cut it.

Location: Ontario | Any cabinet making supplier (since you are from around here good selection is at Richelieu) will have many different sizes/colors/materials grommets to finish round even square cutouts. Some of them will also include cap that will make the hole much smaller after you pull the wires thru and insert the cap on it. Posts: 135 | Get the hole saw bit approximately centered and apply just enough pressure to hold it in place. Then run your drill in reverse, long enough to take off a circle of gelcoat. If you're careful about it, this "track" in the gelcoat will guide your saw long enough to get it started running it forward. Run the drill at max speed, but use only enough pressure to drill through the console slowly.

Posts: 3513 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya!! Might I suggest find a dowel that fits your existing hole. Epoxy it in the hole. Then after a day or two, center punch the dowel. Drill a small pilot hole, then use the hole saw to make your new hole. Steve

Posts: 516 Location: Kildeer, IL | Something like this would work. I've used it to bore a hole through a porcelain sink and it worked great. No center drill bit, so you don't have to worry about that. https://www.amazon.com/Precision-Diamond-Granite-Porcelain-Electropl...
